The Jacksonville Jaguars underwent significant changes this offseason, and it has been reflected in a 5-3 record that has placed them firmly in the playoff race. However, with Liam Coen taking over as the new head coach, it wasn’t the offense that has been the main reason for their success. Instead, a stout defense has them consistently shutting down opponents, even as the offense tries to play catch-up.
Coming out of the bye week, the team had to deal with two major blows. First, Travis Hunter was placed on IR due to an injury sustained in practice, before Brian Thomas Jr. left the game against the Las Vegas Raiders with an ankle injury. With his weapons falling by the numbers, the franchise finally decided to give quarterback Trevor Lawrence some help at the trade deadline.

With the Raiders falling apart at the seams, an overtime loss to Jacksonville may have been the final nail in the coffin. With the team going nowhere, one of the most rumored trade candidates around the league, Jakobi Meyers, finally found a new team.
In exchange, they are parting ways with a fourth and sixth-round pick, as first reported by Adam Schefter. “ESPN sources: Raiders are trading WR Jakobi Meyers to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for fourth- and sixth-round picks,” he wrote.

Despite the weapons on the roster, the Jacksonville offense ranks as a bottom-10 unit on PFSN’s Offense Impact, with Hunter not coming on as strongly as many believed he would in his rookie season, while Brian Thomas Jr. has regressed majorly from a historic rookie campaign.

As a result, a veteran like Meyers, who has four consecutive seasons with 800+ receiving yards, including a career-high 1,027 yards in 2024, might be a very smart get for the Jaguars. Even though he hasn’t gotten off to the best start this year, his numbers are still better than Jacksonville’s current options.
Despite having four wide receivers receive a ranking on PFSN’s WR Impact, none of their pass catchers rank higher than 60th. As a result, Meyers, who is ranked 44th despite a woefully bad performance from the Raiders’ passing attack, could be a blessing for Lawrence.
Signed to a three-year, $33 million contract in 2023, he is in the final year of his deal and becomes an unrestricted free agent next season. Unless the Jags believe they can sign him to a team-friendly deal again, this could turn out to be an overpay for a half-season rental.
But for a franchise that has made the playoffs just four times this century, and has three total wins in that timeframe, the chance to change those numbers is one the new management and coaching staff has clearly shown itself willing to take.
