The Philadelphia Eagles’ offense, specifically the passing attack, has been the talk of the league this season. With the rushing attack falling back to earth after an incredible 2024 campaign from Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts, the issues in the passing game have come to the forefront.
Despite Hurts’ inconsistencies targeting his wideouts, fifth-year WR DeVonta Smith is primed to reach 1,000 yards after only playing in 13 games last year. However, that feat got a bit more difficult after a slow start to the Eagles’ Week 14 Monday Night Football game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
What Happened to Philadelphia Eagles WR DeVonta Smith?
No, Smith is not injured; in fact, he’s played in every game for Philadelphia so far this season. Unfortunately for Smith, he’s failed to make his presence felt in Week 14 against the Chargers. Hurts has targeted him five times, but with the Eagles’ offense struggling against Los Angeles’ defense, Smith has hauled in just two passes for seven yards in this turnover fest.
While Hurts and Chargers QB Justin Herbert are responsible for multiple turnovers, when examining Hurts’ second interception, there’s an argument to be made that Smith may be at fault. One of Hurts’ seven targets to Smith, the wide receiver tripped and fell, allowing Chargers cornerback Donte Jackson to snag an interception.

Jalen Hurts shouldn’t be blamed for this one, can’t fall on your route like this man 🤦♂️ pic.twitter.com/crYzGUbwXa

Heading into Week 14, Smith has caught 60 of 86 targets for 802 yards and three touchdowns. With four more games left in the season, there’s plenty of time to get back into the 1,000-yard club after having 1,196 in 2023 and 1,066 in 2024.

Despite the Eagles’ struggles, Smith has thrived in PFSN’s WR Impact metric, ranking 11th in the league with an impact score of 84.6. Fellow wideout A.J. Brown sits just eight spots under him at 19th with an impact score of 81.3. Their good season is propping up a struggling Eagles offense that ranks 15th in PFSN’s Offense Impact metric with an impact score of 74.6.
The Eagles should be breathing a sigh of relief that they are only down 13-6 as they begin their first offensive drive of the second half.
They have to find a way to jump-start the offense if they want to come back in this game, as well as keep the pressure from the surging Dallas Cowboys off their back as the season winds down.
