The Minnesota Vikings have settled on their starting quarterback after a competitive training camp battle. J.J. McCarthy entered the summer with expectations surrounding his return as the team’s young starter. Instead, Kyler Murray won the job and will open the season under center.
The decision itself was clear, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter generated another debate with how he described McCarthy’s new role.
Adam Schefter Faces Backlash Over J.J. McCarthy’s QB1 Loss
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell named Kyler Murray the starting quarterback on Tuesday, ending the competition with McCarthy. Murray earned the decision after showing stronger command of the offense and better downfield ability during camp. McCarthy, meanwhile, struggled with accuracy and consistency while competing for the job.
Schefter’s reaction to the decision has now become a separate talking point. The ESPN insider highlighted McCarthy’s 6-4 record in his ten starts last season while noting that he missed his entire rookie campaign because of injury.
Schefter then wrote, “J.J. McCarthy missed his entire rookie season due to injury and started just ten games last year, with Minnesota winning six of them. Now the still only 23-year-old will be forced to be a backup.”
This wording drew criticism because it presented McCarthy as someone being pushed into a backup role rather than a quarterback who lost a competition. Critics also pointed to the numbers Schefter did not mention, including McCarthy’s 12 interceptions and 57.6% completion rate during his ten starts.

The reaction spread across NFL social media, with several analysts objecting to Schefter’s choice of words.
NFL analyst Carter Donnick mocked the phrasing, writing, “‘Forced to be a backup,’ just put the agent-sponsored fries in the bag, bro.”
Another analyst focused on the sympathetic tone of Schefter’s post, writing, “You can actually read the teardrops on the keyboard.” JP Acosta was even more direct, calling it “One of the nastiest spins I’ve ever seen.”
The criticism continued as Carter Elliott described the post as “a spin zone,” while writer Zito Madu took an even harsher view of Schefter’s framing, writing, “Schefter is such a shill, it’s amazing to watch. No one has less integrity than him.”
Bart Winkler then took a different angle, writing, “Nothing more to this than the Michigan connection. This business is so gross.”
Still, the football decision came from O’Connell after evaluating both quarterbacks in camp.
Murray, a former No. 1 overall pick and two-time Pro Bowler, signed a one-year deal with Minnesota after leaving Arizona and secured the starting role within the first ten days of training camp.
McCarthy’s future now becomes the bigger question. In 2025, he ranked 34th in PFN’s NFL QB Impact Rankings, three places ahead of Shedeur Sanders. He remains under contract through 2027, but his move to QB2 could create uncertainty around his place in Minnesota.
The Vikings will now build their offense around Murray, who will be under center in the regular-season opener against the Green Bay Packers on September 13.
