The 2026 Patriot Games wrapped up on August 11 at SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio, after three days of competition. The event brought together 120 athletes between the ages of 14 and 17, with the top male and female finishers each earning a $125,000 scholarship.
The event drew even more attention when President Donald Trump decided to drop by on the final day. More chatter, however, was reserved for when ESPN’s Pat McAfee took his seat beside the president.

McAfee met Trump on a rainy tarmac at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. It didn’t take all that long for news and footage of McAfee meeting Trump to go viral.
Soon after, one fan focused on the ESPN personality’s outfit, writing, “I don’t think I could ever have the confidence to greet the President of the United States while wearing a backwards hat.”
One reporter pointed toward ESPN’s role in the event and wrote, “ESPN, which is airing the Patriot Games on its ESPN App, confirmed to FOS that Pat McAfee was invited to attend the event as a guest of President Trump. Wonder if he will announce additional scholarship prize money for the winners and/or any number of participants, as he has a penchant for doing.”

Trump and McAfee entered the SPIRE Academy arena together and took front-row, center-court seats for the final obstacle course challenges. Naturally, the moment gave fans plenty of material.
One fan poked fun at McAfee’s political stance, writing, “But I don’t get political.”
Another took the joke even further, writing, “Pat McAfee is 100% going to run for political office before 2040; book it,” after seeing the pair together.
Reflecting on the event, the former NFL punter later wrote on X, “Had a BLAST celebrating high schoolers from across the country with the Heads of Disney, ABC, ESPN, and… The United States of America.
“I’m proud of all parties getting behind this important initiative to keep future generations excited about remaining active. Cheers to the incredible contestants and to next year’s Patriot Games.”
McAfee’s “don’t get political” comment comes from a broader position he has repeatedly explained about his ESPN program. McAfee has repeatedly stressed that his audience tunes in for sports, entertainment, and positive energy, not political debates. His goal, in essence, is to keep the show as far away from political discourse as possible.
One fan also resurrected the debate around the ESPN layoffs, posting, “They fired half of ESPN for this,” taking aim at the network’s July restructuring.
ESPN eliminated eight high-profile on-air positions while also cutting numerous NFL Network staffers. Among the biggest names affected were Ryan Clark, Karl Ravech, Cam Newton, and Tom Pelissero.
ESPN executives linked the reductions to the NFL Network acquisition, which gave the league a 10% equity stake in ESPN. The deal also forced the network to rethink its staffing structure.
McAfee, however, will remain central to the network’s plans come what may. ESPN is reportedly negotiating a massive contract extension with the popular host, which could expand his role considerably.
