The New York Giants have gone through a clear metamorphosis ever since they made a change at the most important position in the sport. With the Russell Wilson tenure seemingly going nowhere through the first three weeks of the season, head coach Brian Daboll, in a potentially desperate bid to keep his job, gave rookie Jaxson Dart the starting nod starting from Week 4. Since then, the results have been clear in the three games.
Not only have they beaten two cream-of-the-crop teams in the Los Angeles Chargers and the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, but they did it comfortably, with arguably their best player, Malik Nabers, out of the lineup.
Taken down with a torn ACL in the first half against Los Angeles, the team has persevered without him. However, one analyst believes that bringing in a pass-catching threat could raise the company’s ceiling significantly.
Could the New York Giants Get Even Better?
Even though they lost a brutal game to the New Orleans Saints, it was easy to peg that loss as a hiccup for a rookie quarterback and a chance for growth, especially after the squad pulled off a blowout victory over the Eagles.
But it is hard to look at the current personnel on offense and consider New York dangerous, at least on paper. Darius Slayton, when healthy, is handling the WR1 responsibilities in Nabers’ absence.
As it stands, only one receiver on the roster ranks in the top 30 of the league on PFSN’s WR Impact. As a result, the offense seems to have a clear ceiling, and it might not be light-years ahead of their current rank (27th) on Offense Impact.
For Josh Well of PFSN, that means that the team has a clear opportunity to make an improvement. In his list of the top-10 NFL trade candidates, he pegged the Giants as a viable location for the Saints’ Chris Olave.
The rationale behind the pairing is simple. “I think he is a strong fit in any offense, but he could be a reliable receiver for a young quarterback to lean on as they adjust to the league. Olave is currently seventh in the league with 39 receptions, and he has 342 yards and a touchdown.”
A first-round pick in 2022 by New Orleans, Olave has been consistently productive for the Saints and is a big reason for the underrated success of Spencer Rattler as the team’s starting quarterback this season.
After consecutive 1,000-yard seasons to begin his career, a series of concussions in 2024 limited him to just eight games on the season. He totaled 400 yards and brought his touchdown total up to 10, with his score against the Buffalo Bills being the 11th touchdown reception of his career.
Still on his rookie contract, he would fit seamlessly with the Giants’ offense timeline with Dart, Cam Skattebo, and Nabers when he returns, for a team and coaching staff that is clearly desperate to make this season count. A swing for a proven threat on the field might be an easy package to sell them on.
