Who Are the Best Overall Players To Draft in Fantasy?
Assuming 1QB formats for your fantasy leagues with no special scoring modifiers that will alter rankings, prioritize loading up on the positions which make up the majority of your roster. Running backs and wide receivers are who bring home trophies. Depending on the balance of this, you’ll need to adjust your draft-day value to account for the increased positional premium.
That said, the best players to target don’t change, and in 2023, we’ve never had more talent in the league to choose from for fantasy football. While running back has been devalued, the upside of Atlanta Falcons rookie Bijan Robinson is immense.
Although Robinson will cost a pretty penny, the opportunity to finish as a top-three RB is very attainable. Last year, Atlanta running backs were first in yards, yards per carry, and rushing first downs. They were second in EPA/rush and third in success rate, first downs/rush, and TDs/rush. The Falcons were 31st in passing rate over expectation, and while Desmond Ridder should be an upgrade over Marcus Mariota, they’re a run-first offense.
I would also target running backs with passing upside, like Najee Harris, Travis Etienne Jr., Tony Pollard, and Rhamondre Stevenson. Rachaad White is poised for a lead role, and D’Andre Swift is staring down the best opportunity of his career in Philadelphia.
Speaking of Philly, the Eagles are loaded with elite talent and more so than likely anyone else. I’d wager now that the combined ADPs of Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Swift, and Dallas Goedert will be the lowest for any team when you combine the QB/RB/WR/WR/TE ADPs. They all helped win leagues last year and will do so again in 2023.
Take a few shots on rookies, especially wide receivers. Rookie WRs continue to be a cheat code for fantasy. While this class didn’t come in with the most amount of hype, the talent is there.
Players like Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Quentin Johnston, Jordan Addison, Zay Flowers, Jalin Hyatt, Jonathan Mingo, Rashee Rice, Jaydeen Reed, Josh Downs, and Cedric Tillman should quickly move up their team’s depth charts. Odds are, a handful of them break out in 2023 and become screaming values based on their draft-day ADP. Personally, I’m heavily targeting Addison and Johnston early with mid-to-late-round shots on Reed, Downs, Tillman, and Tank Dell, but more so in Best Ball.
For tight end, go early and go elite. I want a difference-maker TE whenever possible, and sure, the opportunity cost is something to consider, but the advantage someone like Travis Kelce or Mark Andrews can bring outweighs the risks. Ideally, I want to walk out with one of Kelce, Andrews, Hockenson, Kittle, or Goedert. The tier below them is still fine, too, with Engram, Pitts, Waller, and Njoku. They’re just slightly less consistent.
A breakout pick for those looking to gamble on the late-round approach, take a hard look at Chigoziem Okonkwo, who is a pure athlete and ran a 4.52 40-yard dash at 6’2″, 243 pounds.
The Tennessee Titans’ pass-catching room is the worst in the NFL, and Okonkwo might just be the No. 2 target. A fourth-round pick in 2022, Okonkwo scored three touchdowns on just 32 receptions and was targeted on 33% of his routes, the third-highest rate for a TE last year. His 10.6% target share is going to be blown out of the water.
