Damon Bruce’s advice for Shedeur Sanders sounds less like quarterback coaching than instructions for surviving a long airport delay: sit down, keep quiet and wait for your name to be called.
Bruce believes Cleveland eventually will call it. Even after Todd Monken named Deshaun Watson the Browns’ Week 1 starter, the radio host predicted Sanders will take over before the 2026 season comes to a close.

“Shedeur, here’s some advice from Uncle Damon, don’t say a word,” Bruce said during a recent What’s Wright? segment. “Just sit there and wait. Be patient. Be quiet and blend in. This is eventually going to get to you.”
Bruce went further than simply predicting a midseason change. He argued Cleveland has “set up Deshaun Watson to fail one final time,” believing the combination of Watson’s play, his relationship with the fan base, and the pressure surrounding him will eventually force the Browns toward Sanders. “You will be QB1 before this year is over,” Bruce said.
He also argued that “there is no player on any roster in any sport more hated by their fan base than Deshaun Watson,” making Cleveland’s patience with the veteran another part of his prediction.

That prediction runs directly against the message coming from Cleveland.
Monken named Watson the starter Monday after evaluating the offseason, training camp, joint practices and two preseason games. More importantly, he said the decision is not intended to be a week-to-week referendum.
Watson finished the preseason 16-of-27 for 162 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Sanders completed 15 of 22 passes for 153 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, including a sharper showing against Buffalo in which he went 9-of-11 for 74 yards and a score.
Shedeur Sanders Still Has Plenty to Prove Before Any Takeover
Bruce’s confidence in an eventual switch does not erase the reason Cleveland chose Watson first.
Sanders’ rookie season was rough enough to leave legitimate developmental questions, as he completed 56.6% of his passes for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
His 63.0 PFN QB Impact grade ranked 37th among 38 qualifying quarterbacks in 2025, well below the 75.0 benchmark for an average starter.

Bruce nevertheless believes patience is the correct play because Watson carries his own pressure points. The veteran is returning after missing all of 2025 following multiple Achilles injuries, and his contract still carries a $40.96 million cap charge in 2026.
Bruce argued that Cleveland’s attachment to the deal should not outweigh performance if the offense sputters.
The Browns open with consecutive road games against Jacksonville and Tampa Bay before returning home against Carolina in Week 3. That gives Watson an immediate runway to prove Monken right before Cleveland’s home crowd gets another vote on the matter.
Sanders, meanwhile, does not need to campaign. Bruce’s entire theory depends on him doing almost nothing publicly while waiting for circumstances to do the campaigning for him.
