Dallas Cowboys News, March 22: A Potential Trade for Khalil Herbert, Stephen A. Smith Trusts Jalen Hurts More Than Dak Prescott, and More

The Dallas Cowboys are still pretty inactive this offseason, but what if they draft Florida State QB Jordan Travis? All of that and more.

The Dallas Cowboys have plenty of needs to address in this year’s NFL Draft. With Dak Prescott’s contract coming to an end following the 2024 season, it may be time to draft an understudy.

Could the Cowboys Draft Jordan Travis?

While the Cowboys acquired former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance in a trade last season, there’s a potential for Dallas to look in a different direction for depth. Pro Football Network’s Derek Tate wrote about his thoughts on where Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis could go.

    The Cowboys came up.

“One could scoff at this selection because of the trade for Lance last season,” Tate wrote. “However, Travis offers a similar skill set with a favorable contract situation that could still develop behind Prescott for his rookie year.

“His arm talent isn’t elite by any measure, but neither was Prescott’s entering the league. Travis has the leadership traits, competitive spirit, and track record of continued development to suggest he could keep getting better in the right situation.”

Travis played six seasons at Florida State, going 637 for 1,027 (62%) on completions for 8,715 passing yards, 66 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions. He added 417 carries for 1,950 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns. Travis even had three catches for 11 receiving yards and a touchdown.

While he’s rehabbing a broken leg, Travis recently shed his walking boot.

Could David Bakhtiari Reunite With Mike McCarthy?

Mike McCarthy was the Green Bay Packers head coach for the first six years of David Bakhtiari’s career. The Cowboys need a left tackle, don’t have a ton of cap space, and Bakhtiari — rehabbing a knee injury — may be on the discount rack. For all sides to get on track, a reunion could be in place.

Bakhtiari has started in all 131 games that he’s played as a pro. This consists of 8,433 snaps while being on the field 81% of the time in games he’s played.

With Tyron Smith heading to the New York Jets, Dallas could use another veteran in his place.

Stephen A. Smith Puts the Jalen Hurts-Dak Prescott Debate to Rest

Stephen A. Smith has a pension for obliterating the Cowboys on ESPN First Take’s national stage. Thursday’s show included Smith ripping Dallas for its inactivity in the offseason and named it the reason why he trusts Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts more than he trusts Prescott.

“Is that a trick question?” asked Smith on ESPN’s First Take. “Why the hell would I have more faith in Dak Prescott over Jalen Hurts?

“Jalen Hurts just got Saquon [Barkley]. Jalen Hurts still got A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert, and an offensive line I would challenge is better than the Dallas Cowboys.”

    What About Some Trade Hypotheticals?

The NFL Draft is coming up, and the Cowboys have been mostly inactive during free agency. Does it mean that Dallas could gear up for a trade?

PFN’s Dallas Robinson has the Cowboys acquiring running back Khalil Herbert from the Chicago Bears for a 2024 sixth-round selection (No. 216).

“Herbert, 24, remains underrated as a pure runner,” Robinson wrote. “The former sixth-round pick finished ninth in attempts per broken tackle (10.2) and 11th in yards after contact per attempt (2.1), suggesting he can generate his own yardage.

“Due just $1.055 million in 2024, Herbert could be a realistic addition for the cap-strapped Cowboys. Dallas would still need to find a pass-catching back, but Herbert would represent a solid start.”
