Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Weighs In on Javonte Williams, Trevon Diggs’ Future in Dallas

The Cowboys are fading out of the playoff race, and Jerry Jones was recently asked for his thoughts on a couple of key pieces heading into 2026.

The Dallas Cowboys are currently attempting to salvage their 2025 season and make a playoff run. It’s been an up-and-down season for the team, and there will be some big decisions to make this offseason.

Jerry Jones was recently asked about the status of two key players: running back Javonte Williams and cornerback Trevon Diggs. Williams is headed for free agency, while Diggs is rumored to be a trade or release candidate. Will either player return to Dallas in 2026?

Jerry Jones Gives Thoughts on Javonte Williams and Trevon Diggs Ahead of Week 16

Williams signed a one-year deal with the Cowboys last offseason. It was viewed as a low-risk, high-reward deal at the time, and that’s exactly what it has proven to be. Williams has taken over the lead-back role for the Cowboys and has 1,113 yards and 10 touchdowns. Only five running backs in the league have more rushing yards than Williams.

As a result, Jones expressed his desire to retain Williams beyond this season. “He’s had an outstanding season,” Jones said. “I love the way he brings the wood, so to speak, when he runs. Looking forward to him hopefully being a Cowboy for a time to come.”

PFSN’s RB Impact ranking gives Williams an 84.0 grade for 2025, which ranks seventh out of 56 qualified running backs. As for Diggs, the veteran has only played in six games this year, dealing with multiple injuries. Diggs has not played a complete season since 2022, and even when he was on the field in 2025, he did not perform as well as expected.

The Cowboys play their final home game of the season in Week 16, and Jones was asked if Diggs has played his last home game for the team, assuming he doesn’t play this weekend.

“I think that’s a stretch to put that thing that far out. I know that on my basis, looking at his situation, I don’t have that kind of attitude about him,” Jones explained.

Diggs signed a five-year, $97 million rookie contract extension with the Cowboys, which runs through 2029. However, the team could create over $12 million in cap space by cutting or trading him this offseason. PFSN’s CB Impact ranking gives Diggs a 61.5 grade for 2025, and he has 13 tackles with no interceptions.

Cowboys Preparing for Big Changes this Offseason

It seems inevitable that the Cowboys will have to make big changes this offseason. According to Over the Cap, only the Kansas City Chiefs are currently projected to be in a bigger cap hole this offseason.

Moving on from Diggs would free up some room, but the team also has some pending free agents, like Williams, who need to be re-signed. Of course, if the team misses the playoffs, Jones could be inclined to make bold moves.

PFSN’s Football Playoff Meter (FPM) gives the Cowboys just over a 1% chance to make the postseason. The Cowboys would need to win out and have the Philadelphia Eagles lose all their remaining games. In that situation, the Cowboys would win the NFC East.
