Aaron Rodgers has yet to officially commit to playing in 2026, but all signs point toward the four-time NFL MVP returning to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The AFC North team traded for Michael Pittman Jr. this offseason and signed running back Rico Dowdle, moves that suggest the franchise is building around its 42-year-old quarterback rather than pivoting toward a rebuild.
However, despite that, FOX Sports analyst Ralph Vacchiano recently floated a trade proposal that sends two-time Pro Bowler DK Metcalf to the Washington Commanders.
Commanders Emerge As a Landing Spot for DK Metcalf
Vacchiano identified the Commanders as a potential landing spot for Metcalf, suggesting a draft-day deal involving Washington’s third-round pick (No. 71) and a 2027 fifth-rounder.
“The idea of the Steelers trading him all depends on what happens with Aaron Rodgers, and whether Pittsburgh goes for it all in 2026 or goes into a rebuilding mode,” Vacchiano wrote.
“They did just trade for Michael Pittman, so their cupboard wouldn’t be bare without Metcalf,” Vacchiano added. “Metcalf was a bit of a disappointment last season with just 59 catches for 850 yards and six touchdowns as Rodgers struggled to find him downfield.”
Vacchiano further highlighted how Metcalf could fit better on the Commanders, who desperately need another receiver to help Jayden Daniels.
“He’d have better luck with the younger, stronger Jayden Daniels throwing him the ball,” Vacchiano continued. “And the Commanders are desperate for a WR opposite Terry McLaurin. Metcalf cost the Steelers a second-round pick. But after a down year, and with three years and more than $100 million left on his contract, something less would do.”
Pittsburgh’s offseason moves so far don’t give any hint that the franchise is willing to shop Metcalf. The trade for Pittman signals the Steelers are committed to contending with Rodgers under center, not stockpiling draft picks for a rebuild. New head coach Mike McCarthy has maintained regular contact with Rodgers, and multiple reports indicate the organization expects him to return.
Even if Metcalf became available, Washington may have a better path to addressing its receiver need. The Commanders have been linked to Brandon Aiyuk, who remains a candidate to get released or traded by the San Francisco 49ers.
The Commanders need receiver help opposite Terry McLaurin, who missed seven games due to injury last season. However, pursuing Aiyuk or drafting a rookie on a cost-controlled deal may align better with general manager Adam Peters’ roster-building timeline than absorbing Metcalf’s contract.

According to PFSN’s WR Impact Metric, Metcalf finished last season as the league’s 23rd-ranked receiver with an impact score of 80.2.
He will undoubtedly make the Commanders a better team, but given how the offseason has shaped so far, it’s unlikely the Steelers will part ways with the 28-year-old playmaker.
