‘You Had One Good Season’ — NFL Analyst Slams 49ers WR Jauan Jennings Over ‘Ridiculous’ Contract Demand

Chris Broussard criticizes Jauan Jennings' contract extension demand from the 49ers, calling it "ridiculous" after just one breakout season.

Following a breakout 2024 season that solidified his role in San Francisco’s high-powered offense, wide receiver Jauan Jennings has reportedly asked the 49ers for either a contract extension or a trade.

That has drawn the ire of Fox Sports 1 analyst Chris Broussard, who voiced frustration over Jennings’ demand and questioned the timing and merit of the request.

Why Does Chris Broussard Find Jauan Jennings’ Request Problematic?

FS1’s Broussard is no stranger to stirring the pot, and his latest comments on Jennings have added another layer to the ongoing discussion about San Francisco’s wide receiver depth. Jennings, who re-signed with the 49ers on a two-year deal worth over $15 million in May 2024, emerged as a reliable option in Kyle Shanahan’s offense last season.

In a breakout campaign, Jennings recorded 77 catches, nearly 1,000 receiving yards, and six touchdowns in 2024. He stepped into a more prominent role after Brandon Aiyuk’s season-ending knee injury and quickly became one of Brock Purdy’s favorite targets.

Before Aiyuk’s injury, Jennings had a limited role as the team’s third wide receiver, reaching 60% playing time only once during the first six weeks of the season. His playing time surged significantly after Aiyuk’s injury in Week 7, with Jennings playing over 84% of the 49ers’ offensive snaps the rest of the way.

Despite this breakout performance, Broussard wasn’t a fan of the wide receiver’s recent contract demand, stating that Jennings has “only had one good season.”

On “First Things First,” Broussard said, “As you know, I like Jennings. I have sung his praises more than anyone else on this show. Maybe even more on TV … I like Jennings, but this is ridiculous.”

He continued, “And I’m usually with athletes when they want to capitalize and get paid, but you had one good season. First of all, they extended him last year … and now you want a new contract.”

What Makes Jennings’ Timing Questionable According to Broussard?

Broussard then questioned the timing of Jennings’ request, suggesting that he could potentially earn an even larger contract next offseason.

“Jennings could be their best receiver. If he does that, his contract next offseason will be much bigger than whatever he would get right now. I get it, the injury risk and all that, but I think he should go out, play the good soldier, have a great year, and then he’ll get paid rather than causing these ruffles now,” Broussard said.

While Broussard makes a valid point regarding Jennings’ potential market value next offseason, his leverage with the 49ers is currently at an all-time high. With Deebo Samuel traded to the Washington Commanders and Aiyuk a candidate to begin the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, Jennings recognizes that this is his best opportunity to secure the bag.

The analyst’s perspective reflects a broader debate about player leverage and timing in contract negotiations. For Jennings, the current landscape presents a unique opportunity to maximize his earning potential while he holds significant value to the organization.
