After Big Transfer Portal Moves, UNC HC Bill Belichick Admits NFL Stint Played a Part in NIL Transition

UNC HC Bill Belichick reflects on how his NFL experience helped him navigate NIL deals and transfer portal moves during roster overhaul.

The North Carolina Tar Heels finished the 2024 season with a 6–7 record, but there’s a wave of optimism with Bill Belichick now at the helm. Since arriving in Chapel Hill, he’s hit the ground running, especially when reshaping the roster through the transfer portal and NIL deals. And he’s so good at it. No surprise there, his decades of NFL experience are paying off.

Bill Belichick Credits NFL Experience for Smooth Adaptation to College Football’s NIL Era

At his August 6 training camp press conference, Belichick told Tar Heels fans what they wanted to hear. Though it’s his first season in college football, the UNC head coach is no stranger to roster building. He credited his NFL background, especially decades of offseason contract negotiations, for helping him navigate the transfer portal and NIL deals efficiently.

Before leaving the Patriots in 2023, Belichick spent over 30 years mastering the art of free agency. Now, he’s bringing that same savvy to Chapel Hill.

“So, dealing with the revenue share, the NIL packages, agent or representatives or players, all those kind of things, that’s the life we’ve lived. So we’re very comfortable with that,” Belichick said.

Following the landmark NCAA-House settlement in June, schools began sharing revenue directly with student-athletes on July 1. Power Four programs can distribute up to $20.5 million annually across their athletic departments, with football expected to claim the biggest slice.

Designed to level the playing field, the policy gives North Carolina the same financial firepower as any ACC or NCAA rival regarding attracting transfers, signing recruits, or retaining top talent. In today’s game, NIL and the transfer portal are more intertwined than ever.

“We don’t have an unlimited amount of money, which we didn’t have in the NFL either. And so, you have to figure out how to distribute it and how to manage the assets and resources that you have, which are good at Carolina, but again, it’s not like we have a blank checkbook, nor does any other team,” Belichick continued.

North Carolina didn’t hire Belichick just to be good; they hired him to be great. The Tar Heels have had good seasons, but nothing that truly moved the needle.

With NIL deals and the transfer portal reshaping the game, UNC needed more than a play-caller. They needed a recruiter, a strategist, and a brand; someone with the pull to bring in top talent and energize the program. In short, they needed their own Deion Sanders.

Belichick may not turn UNC into a powerhouse overnight, but he’s already reignited fan excitement. The big question remains whether his NFL success translates to the college level and whether he can build a winning roster without star power.
