The Florida Gators have stumbled to a rough 2-4 start in the 2025 season, and the calls for head coach Billy Napier to be fired are growing louder. With his tenure seemingly on thin ice, one college football analyst believes Napier’s firing is not a matter of if, but when. He has already linked another prominent SEC head coach as a potential replacement in Gainesville.

When Will Billy Napier Be Fired, and Could Another SEC Coach Replace Him at Florida?
It’s becoming increasingly clear that Billy Napier’s time as the head coach of the Florida Gators may be coming to an end. In his three and a half seasons leading the program, he has posted a 21-23 record, which falls well below Gainesville’s high expectations.
On paper, the Gators haven’t been terrible this season. Their offense ranks 42nd nationally, according to PFSN’s CFB OFFi metric, and their defense ranks a respectable 10th in PFSN’s CFB DEFi metric.
However, Napier has consistently struggled to get the most out of his team in crucial moments, which has been a major factor in the Gators’ four losses this year. Rumors of his potential firing have been circulating for the past month, and they are now reaching a fever pitch.
CBS Sports’ Aaron Torres claimed that sources have told him the Gators could move on from the head coach as early as this weekend. Torres explained that Napier’s overall lack of success makes a change necessary for the program to progress.
“But listen, it’s year four,” Torres said. “He’s under .500, 0-14 away from the swamp against ranked opponents. Hasn’t beaten LSU very much. Hasn’t beaten Tennessee. You know, Miami has embarrassed him two years in a row. It’s just time.” He continued, “Like I said, I believe it’s going to happen. Like I said, I have people in the building that have said that they expect it to happen this weekend.”
Florida is set to face Mississippi State this Saturday, Oct. 18. Torres’ prediction could realistically come true if the Gators lose. He also noted that Florida has a bye in Week 9, which would give the team extra time to regroup following a potential coaching change. If Florida does part ways with Napier, there will be plenty of possible replacements, as the Gators’ job is one of the most appealing in the country given the program’s history and resources.
According to Torres, the top candidate is Lane Kiffin, the current head coach of Florida’s SEC rival, Ole Miss. While Kiffin has been linked to nearly every major coaching search in recent years, he has not left Ole Miss for any of them. Still, Torres believes Kiffin may have reached his ceiling with the Rebels, and a move to Florida could give him a better opportunity to compete for a national title.

“We all kind of understand that he’s maybe hit a ceiling there,” Torres said. “I mean, there’s only so many levels more you can go up to at Ole Miss, better than, you know, consistent 10-win seasons.” Torres added, “It’s a tough job, and he has done as well as he can do there. I think Florida is absolutely a job where national championship aspirations and goals are realistic.”
While the Gators would undoubtedly love to bring in a coach like Kiffin, there’s a strong possibility that the Ole Miss head coach may not want to leave Oxford at this point in his career. It will be interesting to see if Torres is correct about the timing of Napier’s firing and whether Kiffin would be willing to take the job when the Gators eventually call.
