Where Do Notre Dame and Pitt Stand Heading Into Week 12?

Notre Dame has clawed back into contention after starting the 2025 college football season with a pair of close losses to Miami and Texas A&M. Marcus Freeman and his Fighting Irish ran over Purdue, Arkansas, Boise State, NC State, USC, Boston College, and Navy to climb to No. 9 in the College Football Playoff Selection Committee Rankings.

Meanwhile, PFSN’s playoff meter ranks Notre Dame the ninth-best chance of making the college football playoffs at 47.99% and that could change depending on the results of the following weeks’ games.

In terms of offense, the Fighting Irish are tied for ninth place in the FBS rankings in scoring at 38.7 points per game and 15th in total yards at 466.1 yards per game. They’re both 26th in passing and rushing yards with 271.7 ypg and 194.4 ypg, respectively. They also rank ninth in PFSN’s Offense Impact metric with a grade of B+.

Notre Dame is also a tough customer on defense, allowing an 18th-best 18.8 ppg and 15th-best 102.6 ypg in terms of rushing yards allowed. Though the Fighting Irish’s passing defense is much to be desired at 232.3 ypg (tied 88th in FBS), their total yards allowed ranks 45th in the nation at 334.9 ypg.

On the other hand, Pat Narduzzi’s Pittsburgh has won five straight since starting the season at 2-2. Following their loss to Louisville, the Panthers went on to rack up victories over Boston College, Florida State, Syracuse, NC State, and Stanford.

The game against Notre Dame will be the biggest test this season for Pittsburgh, especially on its offensive side. The Panthers’ offense has scored 39.7 ppg, which ranks sixth in the nation, and their passing is at 11th place at 302.6 ypg. They’re 35th in total yards at 426.8 ypg, and their rushing is 104th best at 124.2 ypg. On PFSN’s Offense Impact metric, they have a grade of C.

Pittsburgh’s defense is among the best in the FBS in terms of rushing yards allowed at 80.9 ypg, which ranks third in the nation, and its total yardage allowed is in 25th place at 318.3 ypg. ESPN’s College GameDay Broadcast To Emanate From Acrisure Stadium

ESPN’s College GameDay will broadcast live from Acrisure Stadium on Saturday for the Notre Dame-Pitt game, starting at 9 a.m. ET. Panthers great and former NFL lineman Aaron Donald will be the guest picker for Week 12.

Donald, who played for Pitt from 2010-13 and the Rams from 2014-23, will have his No. 97 jersey retired at halftime. There will also be a tribute to the 50th anniversary of Tony Dorsett’s 303-yard rushing game against Notre Dame in 1975.

Additionally, this will be the first College Football Playoff Top 25 matchup held in Pittsburgh since the CFP era began.
