Arch Manning is once again in the headlines of college football following a promising season last year. He is also heavily projected as a potential No. 1 pick for the 2027 NFL Draft despite only one season of starting experience.
Does Arch Manning Hold the Potential to be the Clearcut 2027 No. 1 Pick?
Ian Kenyon of Prep Network and Bleacher Report recently shared his early evaluations of quarterbacks in the 2027 NFL Draft class and offered a bold comparison involving Manning.
“Arch Manning comp heading into the 2026 season is going to end up being Ryan Tannehill. Which doesn’t mean Arch can’t go no. 1 next season. But I do think there’s a lot of projection being baked into the assumption that he’s going to be no. 1,” Kenyon wrote.
By comparing Manning’s projection to Tannehill’s, Kenyon was not criticizing him as a poor prospect. Instead, he was saying that Manning’s evaluation is still highly more projection-based than firmly established production.
Tannehill was also a strong quarterback prospect who was drafted No. 8 overall by the Miami Dolphins after starting just 19 games at quarterback in college. Draft evaluations at the time required predicting his future development once he fully committed to the position and improved his processing ability. He later built an 11-year NFL career, earned a Pro Bowl selection, signed a contract worth $118 million, and led the Tennessee Titans to the No. 1 seed in the AFC along with an AFC Championship Game appearance.
Manning is in a similar boat to Tannehill regarding limited tape, as he sat behind Quinn Ewers, and his actual regular-season starting sample size is small. Much of the hype surrounding his draft pick is driven by his football lineage, five-star recruit status, and Texas’ quarterback-friendly system.
Manning completed 248 of 404 passes for 3,163 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions in 2025. He also added 399 yards as a rusher and finished the season with an 83.1 score in the PFSN College Football QB Impact Metric.
While some early-career projections still see Manning as a flawless No. 1 overall pick, some analysts view him as a highly traits-driven prospect who still has room to mature. One key concern is an inconsistent release point, with some other notable areas for improvements. The 2026 season is expected to be his opportunity to reduce turnover-worthy plays against disguised coverages and prove he can elevate the Longhorns even when the supporting cast is not at full strength.
Manning was limited due to a foot surgery, and some worried that missing spring reps with a newly retooled group of pass-catchers could lead to a slow start. However, he has reportedly been medically cleared for all football activities in mid-management and will fully participate once summer workouts begin on June 1.
