Quarterback Darian Mensah finally got his dream move from the Duke Blue Devils to the Miami Hurricanes after a protracted saga that involved the Blue Devils suing the player over a contract signed to stay with the program for two years. The matter was settled out of court, and after that, Mensah quickly rocked up at Coral Gables to replace Carson Beck.
Although he was a hero just a few weeks ago, Mensah is now persona non grata in Durham due to the controversy surrounding his exit from the program.
Darian Mensah Sends Pointed Message to Duke Fans
Despite the nature of his controversial exit from Duke, in an interview with On3’s Pete Nakos on Friday, Mensah revealed that he held no grudge towards the Blue Devils fans.
“What do I want to say to Duke fans? I’ll probably just leave that alone,” Mensah said, “To be honest, they’re pretty hostile towards me. I’m obviously grateful for all the support I’ve received during the season. Duke’s a special place. I’ve got nothing but good things to say about that place. Changed my life in the best way possible. Grateful.”
Mensah led the Blue Devils to an unprecedented ACC championship win over the Virginia Cavaliers in December, the program’s first outright title since 1962, earning the championship game MVP award. Coral Gables has become the Mecca of veteran college football quarterbacks seeking to polish their draft stocks before departing for the NFL. Starting with Cam Ward, who moved to Miami and dragged them back into relevance before being selected No. 1 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Carson Beck transferred from Georgia to Miami last year and led the Hurricanes to their first national championship game in 25 years, changing many people’s perceptions of his game-winning qualities. During Friday’s interview with On3, Mensah broke down why Miami was the program of choice for him after leaving Duke.

“Miami is going to take me to the place I want to go, which is ultimately the NFL,” Mensah said. “They’ve got NFL coaches. Coach (Shannon) Dawson, what he does with quarterbacks. His track record is pretty amazing, and it’s something I wanted to be a part of.
“The way coach (Mario) Cristobal protects the quarterback, he’s always going to have a solid O-line and then the weapons just all around the team and everyone that’s a part of Miami. Seemed like it was a great fit for me. I want to make the NFL. I want to be a first-round draft pick. And all signs point towards Miami. Miami’s done it.”
Mensah tallied 3,973 passing yards, resulting in 34 touchdowns and six interceptions for Duke last season, earning an impressive PFSN College QB Impact score of 88.2.
