College Fantasy Football Rules: What’s Different From NFL Fantasy?
Start with the lineup. A standard 12-team league starts one quarterback, two running backs, two wide receivers, one tight end, two flex spots, a defense, and a team offense. There is no kicker. That leaves 10 starters across 18 roster spots, so bench space is tight and cuts come early and often.
Team offense is the position with no NFL equivalent, and it rewards clean, high-scoring units. Every touchdown is worth 3 points, the first 300 yards of offense pays 1.5, each additional 50 yards adds a quarter point, and made field goals are worth 1.
A win adds another point, a loss costs 1, and turnovers run minus 2 apiece, which is why efficiency matters more than raw explosiveness. Six offenses cleared 200 points in the 2025 regular season under Yahoo’s scoring, led by national champion Indiana at 239.7, followed by Texas Tech, Notre Dame, Utah, Vanderbilt, and Ohio State.
The calendar is different, too. Yahoo drafts open Aug. 3 and scoring begins when Week 1 kicks off Sept. 3, with the fantasy regular season running through Week 11 and the playoffs occupying Weeks 12 and 13. Commissioners can adjust details like whether passing touchdowns pay 4 or 6, but that short runway makes a slow start hard to survive.
How To Use PFN’s College Fantasy Rankings on Draft Day
Running backs come off the board in bunches. Volume is the most projectable thing in this sport, and a back with a clear path to 200 touches beats a quarterback who might throw for 4,000 yards. Expect a run on rushers early, and wait on quarterback because startable ones turn up on waivers most weeks.

Watch tight end designations, because programs list receiver-sized players there every year, and that arbitrage decides leagues.
