Darian Mensah delivered a standout sophomore campaign for Duke, throwing for 3,973 yards with 34 touchdowns and 6 interceptions to earn second-team All-ACC honors. After leading the Blue Devils to an ACC title, Mensah announced Tuesday he will join 2026 national runner-up Miami next season, ending weeks of tug-of-war with Duke.
Following Mensah’s announcement, several ACC coaches discussed his talent and what he could bring to Miami next season. Among them was six-time Super Bowl champion and North Carolina coach Bill Belichick, who offered his insights on the up-and-coming signal-caller.
UNC Coach Bill Belichick Impressed With Darian Mensah’s Abilities
Belichick, whose team will face Mensah and Miami on Oct. 31 after the 2026 season schedule was announced Monday, shared his thoughts on the quarterback when the programs met in November 2025.
The former Patriots and Browns coach said the 6’3″ San Luis Obispo native reminds him of an NFL quarterback because of his pocket presence and ability to read defenses. Combined with his accuracy and mechanics, Belichick considers Mensah a strong quarterback.
“He’s not out there running around trying to be a running back. He’s a quarterback — and a really good one. The more I watched him play (at Tulane), the more impressed I was. Then we caught him in some crossover games this year. The closer you look, the more impressive he is to me,” the 73-year-old coach said.
Belichick observed Mensah’s performance firsthand during Duke’s game against North Carolina. In that game, Mensah went 20 of 33 for 175 yards and 1 touchdown while leading Duke to a 32-25 win over North Carolina.
That victory over the Tar Heels marked the beginning of Duke’s four-game winning streak. Riding that momentum, a 17-point win over Wake Forest put the Blue Devils in ACC championship contention. Duke then continued its end-of-season surge with a 27-20 overtime win over No. 17 Virginia in the ACC Championship and capped it with a 42-39 victory over Arizona State in the Sun Bowl.
During this stretch, Darian Mensah went 92 of 144 for 966 yards, with nine touchdowns and two interceptions. His performances earned praise from college football analysts, who identified him as a player to watch for the 2026 season.
Shortly after the season ended, Mensah announced his intention to enter the transfer portal. Duke responded with a lawsuit concerning his previous NIL agreement, delaying his immediate move.
The dispute was ultimately resolved with a settlement, clearing the way for Mensah’s transfer to the Hurricanes, led by Mario Cristobal. Miami is now determined to build on or surpass its 2026 national championship run next season.
Reports indicated Mensah received a $10-million offer to transfer to Miami, which needs a new signal-caller since Carson Beck’s eligibility expired after the 2026 season.

Mensah replaces Beck, who led the Hurricanes to a dramatic College Football Playoff run that began at No. 10 in the rankings. Miami defeated Texas A&M, Ohio State, and Ole Miss before falling to Indiana 27-21 in the national championship game last season.
With Mensah stepping into this pivotal role, attention will be on Miami as it seeks to build on last season’s success. If Mensah can harness his talents alongside the Hurricanes’ support staff, another championship opportunity could follow.
