John Mateer’s Oklahoma Return Offers ‘One Last Chance To Prove His Place,’ Analyst Claims

With improved balance and an elite defense, Oklahoma is poised to rise in 2026 as John Mateer faces a defining season under center.

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer has officially made his decision, and it’s one that could shape both his legacy and the Sooners’ trajectory in the SEC. Amid heavy speculation surrounding the Sooners’ quarterback room and whether Mateer would declare for the NFL Draft, the answer is now clear: he’s returning to Norman for the 2026 season.

John Mateer’s Time To Lead the Sooners Is Now

According to Pro Football Sports Network analyst James Fragoza, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

“While John Mateer’s turnover luck regressed against him in 2025, he flashed growth as a passer. He wasn’t going to put up the same gaudy numbers he did at Washington State in his first season in the SEC, but he has one last chance to prove his place (and Oklahoma’s) in the conference.”

Fragoza’s assessment hits at the heart of the matter. Mateer’s return isn’t just about personal development; it’s about validating Oklahoma’s belief that he could be the program’s savior during a critical transition period.

The Sooners didn’t bring Mateer in to simply compete; they brought him in to restore national relevance and lead them back to championship contention, something the program has been chasing since joining the SEC.

The decision comes after a strong 10–2 regular season that saw Oklahoma reach the College Football Playoff, a major step forward and a clear sign that the arrow is pointing up for Brent Venables’ squad.

Mateer was a central figure in that rise. A dynamic quarterback capable of hurting defenses with both his arm and his legs, he creates constant matchup problems and thrives in chaos.

That impact didn’t always show up in the advanced metrics. Mateer finished the 2025 season with a PFSN QB Impact Grade of 78.6, ranking 72nd nationally. However, that number doesn’t tell the full story. A midseason hand injury and subsequent surgery clearly affected his play, yet Mateer gutted through the pain and remained on the field, a testament to his toughness and leadership.

The talent, however, is undeniable. Just one year earlier at Washington State in 2024, Mateer graded as the 16th-best quarterback in the country with an 81.3 impact grade. And in his final outing of the 2025 season, he reminded everyone of that ceiling.

Against Alabama in the College Football Playoff, Mateer threw for 307 yards, accounted for three total touchdowns, and showed flashes of the player Oklahoma believes can elevate the program to new heights.

2026 Is the Year It All Must Come Together

Still, flashes aren’t enough anymore.

With the injury now in the rearview mirror and the 2026 season on the horizon, the expectation is simple: produce. For Mateer, this is his last chance to prove Oklahoma made the right bet. For the Sooners, there are no excuses. Norman is as cutthroat as college football towns come, and the standard has always been elite-of-the-elite.

While the 10-win season and CFP appearance reignited belief among the fan base, the first-round loss to Alabama, especially at home, left a bitter taste. To take the next step, Oklahoma must address its biggest offensive weakness.

The Sooners couldn’t run the ball to save their lives at points throughout the season and were ranked 113th nationally in rushing yards per game, a glaring issue that put too much pressure on Mateer to carry the load more often than any QB should have to.

If that running game improves, taking less off of Mateer, and the offense can complement a defense that graded out at an elite 95.8 (third-best in the country in 2025), Oklahoma becomes a serious threat. With balance, health, and continuity, the Sooners have the pieces to rise again.

And at the center of it all stands John Mateer, battle-tested and motivated, now facing the defining season of his career. If he delivers, he won’t just silence the doubters. He’ll lead Oklahoma back to where it believes it belongs.
