The Red River Showdown has been one of the most intense rivalries not just in College Football, but arguably in all sports, and on October 11, the Oklahoma Sooners will face the Texas Longhorns at the Cotton Bowl in what could be a defining moment for both programs.
With playoff stakes and conference pride on the line, the matchup is more than a game; it’s a measuring stick for quarterbacks, coaches, and team identities alike. Texas, led by Arch Manning, seeks validation as a playoff contender, while Oklahoma hopes to maintain its unbeaten streak and keep its SEC title aspirations alive.
John Mateer’s Recovery from Injury and Red River Implications
The Sooners (4-0, tied for No. 4 SEC) enter the showdown with winning momentum after a narrow 24-17 victory over Auburn. That win, however, came at a cost — signal-caller John Mateer suffered a wrist injury in the first quarter.
Despite the setback, Mateer threw for 271 yards and added a rushing touchdown, helping Oklahoma secure the win. Surgery during the bye week ruled him out for Oklahoma’s Week 6 clash with Kent State on October 4, but attention has quickly shifted to the Red River Rivalry.
CBS insider Matt Zenitz provided an update on John Mateer’s recovery, giving Oklahoma fans a reason for cautious optimism. He explained the medical staff’s feedback following Mateer’s surgery:
“Just that the surgery went well. They as a staff got good feedback coming out of that, and the last that I heard in terms of any real update went back to last week. They felt like the surgery went well enough, and the feedback was good enough, that even though it was too early to tell whether this was realistic or not, there was at least an outside chance he could be back as soon as the Texas game. Either way, it does not seem like he’s going to be sidelined for an extended period of time.”
Zenitz also commented on the fan and media attention surrounding Mateer’s potential return, highlighting how the quarterback has become a symbol of hope in Norman:
“So, do they build the statue of the surgeon next week or do they wait until after? I’ve never seen a surgeon get this much hype. It’s been crazy to see just the kind of folk hero he’s becoming in Norman. I cannot even imagine the amount of attention he’ll get if, hypothetically, John Mateer plays in that game, goes out and plays at a high level, and leads Oklahoma to a win.”
Mateer, who sustained a broken bone in his throwing hand during the Auburn game on September 20, has compiled 1,215 passing yards with six touchdowns and added five rushing scores through the first four games.
Despite undergoing surgery last week, no official return timeline has been given. Oklahoma fans remain concerned about his availability for the marquee Texas matchup, but the viral message board post indicating an outside chance of his return has reignited optimism around Norman. The Longhorns enter with confidence, led by Manning, whose balanced passing attack has elevated the Longhorns’ offense.
According to the PFSN College QB Impact (QBi) Metric, Mateer holds an 86.3 score, ranking 11th among eligible quarterbacks and earning a B grade through Week 5, highlighting his importance to the Sooners’ continued success.
Oklahoma’s playoff hopes and championship trajectory may hinge on Mateer’s recovery and performance. If he returns healthy and ready for the Red River Rivalry, the Sooners could maintain their unbeaten run and send a statement to the SEC and the national landscape.
