It’s A Mess, It’s Ridiculous’ — Ex-Louisiana Tech QB Goes Scorched Earth as LSU HC Lane Kiffin Stands His Ground in NFL Returnees Controversy

Luke McCown takes a strong stance against Lane Kiffin and LSU’s controversial plans to bring former NFLers back to college football.

LSU head coach Lane Kiffin has found himself in the eye of a storm in a controversy that has since overshadowed the anticipation surrounding their Week 1 opener against the Clemson Tigers.

With LSU standing firm on its policy on NFL returnees, former Louisiana Tech quarterback Luke McCown has entered the debate with a blistering assessment of Kiffin and the controversy over college programs allowing former professional players to return to the collegiate ranks.

Luke McCown Delivers Blunt Take on LSU and Lane Kiffin’s Controversial Move

Ahead of Kiffin’s first season at LSU, expectations have already begun building around the program even before the Tigers take the field. PFN’s Playoff Meter currently gives LSU a 31.6% chance of reaching the College Football Playoff during the 2026 season.

However, before the start of the season, Kiffin and the Tigers sparked a nationwide debate by reportedly reaching out to multiple players on NFL rosters, as well as their representatives, to explore a path back to college football.

The Tigers have already signed Zxavian Harris and Dae’Quan Wright to that end.

The move quickly generated strong reactions across the college football landscape, and McCown has now entered the discussion with a strongly worded post.

“Once NIL happened, it was only a matter of time,” McCown wrote. “And it’s ridiculous. These players are independent contractors now getting paid to play, and when they can’t cut it at the pro level. But “someone” wants to pay them to play, how can you tell them that they can’t “work” or “earn a living”. When an “employer” wants to hire them? That’s the mess.

“It’s a mess. It’s ridiculous; they should not be allowed back to the college ranks. NCAA is not a farm league you can bounce in and out of like minor league ball. You’re either good enough to be pro, or you’re not. If you’re not, don’t leave college or enter the draft.”

On Thursday, a Louisiana judge cleared the way for a pair of former NFL signees to play for the Tigers, including Wright and Harris. During Thursday’s hearing, the SEC separately filed a lawsuit in federal court against LSU, Kiffin, and other school administrators.

However, amid the ongoing drama, Wright and Zxavian Harris were left off LSU’s official roster ahead of Saturday’s season opener against Clemson. The decision appears to have been made to avoid an immediate confrontation with the SEC while the broader legal dispute continues.

Both Wright and Harris previously played under the new LSU head coach during his tenure at Ole Miss.

However, despite being left off the roster for the Clemson matchup, both players could still be added later in the season, as long as they remain enrolled at LSU.
