Calls Mount for Action Against Scott Woodward as LSU Makes Brian Kelly Decision

LSU fans target Scott Woodward after his $95M Brian Kelly hire backfires, questioning the AD's expensive pattern of football coaching mistakes.

LSU fans calling for Brian Kelly’s firing have turned their focus to athletic director Scott Woodward after the Tigers’ 49-25 collapse against Texas A&M. Social media reactions suggest Woodward’s big-money coaching hires have created as many problems as they’ve solved.

What Are LSU Fans Saying About Scott Woodward on Social Media?

Several fans on X criticized Woodward’s track record with football coaching decisions following LSU’s blowout loss on Oct. 25.

A user highlighted Woodward’s pattern of questionable contracts: “Checking out Scott Woodward’s football contract decisions: 2017 Axe Sumlin $10.7m, 2017 Guarantee Jimbo $75m over 10 years. 2021 Extend and raise Jimbo to $9/yr (results in $77m cost to not coach). Skips off to LSU 2021 Guarantee Brian Kelly $95 over 10 years.”

A user called for immediate termination: “Scott Woodward needs to be fired also. No if’s and or buts about it!”

Another user expressed frustration with coaching hires specifically: “Well, from my perspective, Scott Woodward has a hiring football coaches issue, doesn’t seem to be very successful, other sports not an issue, Johnson a super hire, Coach Mulkey, a great hire. Jimbo at TAMU & now it seems Kelly, crazy buyout numbers. He needs help with football.”

A user demanded accountability: “Scott Woodward future needs to be talked about as well for even giving somebody a contract for 10 years.”

Another bluntly said, “Fire Scott Woodward!”

The reactions came after reports from sources that LSU officials were in discussions with Brian Kelly about his future in Baton Rouge following the devastating home loss.

Scott Woodward met with Kelly on Sunday morning in what CBS Sports described as a contentious meeting that “reportedly did not go well,” with the conversation shifting from potential staff changes to Kelly’s own job security. The result was the termination of one of the most tumultuous head coaching tenures in program history.

Why Is Scott Woodward Under Scrutiny?

Woodward gave Kelly a 10-year, $95 million contract in November 2021, creating a massive financial problem for LSU. If the Tigers fire Kelly without cause after this season, they would owe approximately $52 million to $54 million in buyout money, one of the largest in college football history.

LSU’s 2025 season has fallen short of expectations. The Tigers are 5-3 overall and 2-3 in SEC play after starting 4-0 with a win at Clemson. LSU ranks 40th in PFSN’s Defense Impact metric, with an 80.2 score and a B- grade.

Kelly has compiled a 34-14 record at LSU without reaching the College Football Playoff. PFSN’s Playoff Meter projects just 7.13 wins for the season, giving the Tigers only a 2.18% chance to make the postseason. The offense ranks 121st nationally in rushing at 104.8 yards per game.

Reports indicated that LSU position coaches were sent home from the facility on Sunday following a tense meeting between Woodward and Kelly, culminating in a parting of ways.
