Brock Purdy’s improbable rise from the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft to the highest-paid player in San Francisco 49ers history reached a new milestone on Friday, May 16, as the quarterback agreed to a five-year, $265 million contract extension with the team.
Brock Purdy Goes From Mr. Irrelevant to Mr. Moneybags
The deal, which includes $181 million in total guarantees and $165.05 million secured in the first three years, locks Purdy in as the 49ers’ franchise quarterback through the 2030 season. The extension carries an average annual value (AAV) of $53 million, tying Purdy for seventh among NFL quarterbacks in terms of yearly salary, alongside Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff.
Purdy, 25, entered the NFL as “Mr. Irrelevant” — the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft — and quickly defied expectations. Thrust into the starting role as a rookie due to injuries, he led the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game and, in his second season, set a franchise record with 4,280 passing yards while guiding San Francisco to a Super Bowl appearance.
Purdy’s $53 million per-year average places him behind only Dak Prescott ($60 million), Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence, and Jordan Love (all at $55 million), and Tua Tagovailoa ($53.1 million) in average annual salary among quarterbacks.
In terms of total contract value, Purdy’s $265 million deal trails only Patrick Mahomes ($450 million), Josh Allen ($330 million), and Joe Burrow ($275 million). His $181 million in guaranteed money ranks second in the league, behind only Allen’s $250 million in guarantees.
Quarterback | Team | Total Contract Value | Average Annual Value | Total Guarantees |
Patrick Mahomes | Kansas City Chiefs | $450 million | $45 million | – |
Josh Allen | Buffalo Bills | $330 million | $55 million | $250 million |

Purdy’s extension comes as the 49ers look to rebound from a disappointing 6-11 season in 2024, a campaign marked by injuries and roster turnover. Despite the team’s struggles, Purdy remained a bright spot, throwing for 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns in 15 starts last season.
With several key contributors departing in the offseason, the 49ers are betting on Purdy to lead a revamped roster back to contention. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have both publicly expressed their confidence in Purdy’s leadership and performance.
“Brock is the leader of our team,” Shanahan said earlier this year. “We’re capable of winning a Super Bowl with him. We just almost did. And I know he’s capable of getting the Niners a Super Bowl in the future.”
