Baker Mayfield Reveals Buccaneers’ Underwhelming Contract Offer and 1 Aspect That Was the ‘Most Disappointing’

As training camp kicks off around the NFL, the preseason storylines are only getting juicier. One to watch comes out of Tampa Bay, where two-time Pro Bowl quarterback and former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers face a contract dispute that will now loom over the 2026 season.

With media availabilities getting underway ahead of training camps across the league, Mayfield was asked about his contract status, given that the eight-year veteran is heading into year nine with an expiring deal.

Mayfield made it known to the public how his disappointment with the offers he was presented with has affected negotiations heading into the new season. One factor of the deal proved to be the final straw for the quarterback’s camp, as Mayfield is now expected to play through the final year of his deal without a new contract. This would make him one of the more sought-after free agents in 2027.

Mayfield spoke in detail to ESPN, telling Jeremy Fowler that he was offered a two-year deal by the Buccaneers and that the lack of long-term commitment from the team he has spent the last three seasons with was “probably the most disappointing” part.

Mayfield also told Fowler that he hoped to enter the $50M+ club as part of his new deal, but the Buccaneers were far from that number. The star quarterback has continuously stated that he is all in this season and that the contract negotiations will not be a distraction. Likely why Mayfield and the Bucs are expected to put negotiations on hold until the end of the season.

After an underwhelming season last year, where he ranked 22nd among quarterbacks in the league, according to PFN’s QB Impact Metric, Mayfield looks prepared to bet on himself during the 2026 season.

However, it seems that both sides can agree on one thing: the Buccaneers need a big season. There has been plenty of noise around this team in the offseason, from franchise receiving leader and future Hall of Famer Mike Evans leaving for San Francisco and star defensive tackle Vita Vea reportedly requesting a trade after stalled contract negotiations. General manager Jason Licht appears to have his hands full.

This all comes after a monumental collapse last season that cost the team a playoff berth and seemingly put head coach Todd Bowles on the hot seat. The Buccaneers are not trending in the direction they would have hoped for.
