The San Francisco 49ers continued reshaping their wide receiver room this offseason by signing veteran Christian Kirk to a one-year deal. The move gives quarterback Brock Purdy another experienced target as the team restructures its passing attack entering the 2026 season.
The signing also created a full-circle moment for Purdy, who revealed he had followed Kirk’s career long before the two became teammates.
Brock Purdy Shares Full-Circle Moment With New 49ers WR Christian Kirk
NFL insider Jordan Schultz shared a video on X showing a conversation between Purdy and Kirk from 2023, when the 49ers quarterback explained he looked up to the receiver years ago during a high school championship game in Arizona.
“I went to your junior year or senior year state championship game at U of A. You went crazy. Had like six touchdowns in the first half,” Purdy told Kirk. “To be on the same field as you, especially being from Arizona.”
Kirk responded with praise of his own, telling Purdy he has enjoyed watching the quarterback’s rise in the NFL.
“I’ve been watching you, man. It’s been fun to follow,” Kirk said.

Both players share Arizona ties. Kirk starred at Saguaro High School before continuing his career at the University of Arizona, where he developed into one of the program’s most productive receivers. Purdy later followed his own path to the NFL via Iowa State and eventually became San Francisco’s starting quarterback.
Their careers now intersect as the 49ers reshape a wide receiver group that experienced significant turnover. San Francisco had already added veteran wide receiver Mike Evans earlier in free agency. The team then signed Kirk to a one-year, $6 million contract.
His addition gives Purdy another experienced option in the passing game. Depth at the position became a priority after injuries and roster changes affected the group last season.
Ricky Pearsall showed flashes of potential but missed much of the year due to injury. Jauan Jennings remains a free agent seeking a new contract, and Brandon Aiyuk’s future with the organization appears finished following a prolonged standoff with the team.
Kirk’s recent production has fluctuated, but earlier seasons show the type of impact he can provide in the right role. He ranked No. 32 in PFSN’s WR Impact Metric in both the 2022 and 2023 seasons. San Francisco likely views him as a complementary option behind Pearsall and Evans as the team rebuilds the receiving corps.
The 49ers could still add another receiver during the 2026 NFL Draft, which features strong depth at the position. Another young playmaker would help round out the group as the roster continues to evolve.
Purdy’s comment about watching Kirk years ago adds a personal layer to the signing. A player he once watched dominate a high school championship game in Arizona is now lining up as one of his targets in San Francisco’s offense.
