‘Lot of Money on the Line’ — NFL Insider Sets Record Straight on C.J. Stroud Ahead of Texans’ 2026 Campaign

With the talent on the roster, one insider believes C.J. Stroud finding his rhythm again could make them a Super Bowl contender.

After parting ways with Deshaun Watson, the Houston Texans were able to find a fresh start with C.J. Stroud as their new quarterback. A stellar rookie season led many to believe that he could be a franchise cornerstone for the team.

But since his rookie year, it has been a tale of diminishing returns. Now, with the defense widely regarded as among the best in the NFL, the onus is on the youngster to prove himself worthy of a new contract extension.

C.J. Stroud’s Career Depends on the 2026 NFL Season

Winning Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023, Stroud led the Texans to the playoffs through some incredible week-to-week performances, further amplified by his efficiency in the clutch. However, in subsequent seasons, he hasn’t had the same level of success.

Last year was the worst example, as he tallied 3,041 yards and 19 touchdowns against 8 interceptions over 14 games. As a result, he ranked at number 15 on PFN’s Quarterback Impact Metric with an impact score of 76.6.

On the other hand, the Texans’ defense was among the most brutal units in the entire NFL. Ranked at number 2 on PFN’s Defense Impact Metric, they were consistently making life hell for opposing quarterbacks.

“They have been trying to sign him, and obviously, they’d like to get the deal done by the start of the season,” Adam Schefter revealed on the latest episode of “Get Up.” However, there were going to be some disagreements because of how the season ended for Stroud.

Through two playoff games, he committed 7 turnovers with just 2 touchdowns to his credit. It effectively ended any chances they might have had to beat the New England Patriots in the Divisional Round.

“The two sides have not been overly close,” Schefter added. “There have been discussions, both sides would like to get it done. But it really sets up a very interesting scenario with a huge season ahead for C.J. Stroud.”

For Schefter, it boiled down to two main possibilities:

“If they don’t get the deal done and he plays well, you’re going to see a bunch of quarterback deals next year upwards of $60 million-$65 million. If he doesn’t play well and then he didn’t get the deal done now, and then he lost that opportunity.”

The caliber of the defense and the playmakers, like Nico Collins, the recently acquired David Montgomery, and a returning Tank Dell, have the Texans overflowing with talent at virtually every spot. As a result, they could be a realistic Super Bowl contender if Stroud can hold up his end of the bargain.

“Lot of pressure on him on a team that is gonna be good enough in every position to contend for a Super Bowl title, and they’re going to go back to the quarterback and how he plays,” Schefter added. “So there’s gonna be a lot of money on the line this season.”

It remains to be seen if Stroud can meet the pressure of the moment. But he has already shown that he can be an excellent quarterback in the league. If he can capture a similar level of production, paired with the quality of their defense, the Texans might immediately slot into contendership status, while a huge payday awaits Stroud in the offseason.
