TreVeyon Henderson’s week took a concerning turn with one awkward cut on a wet practice field. Four days later, the New England Patriots have received the update they wanted.
Henderson injured his right ankle during Monday’s practice when he slipped while making a cut in an 11-on-11 period. The second-year running back left the session early and underwent precautionary testing, but the latest reporting indicates he avoided a serious injury and is expected to be available when New England opens the regular season against the Seattle Seahawks.
What Happened to TreVeyon Henderson?
Henderson’s injury occurred during the Patriots’ Aug. 24 practice. ESPN’s Mike Reiss initially reported that Henderson slipped on a cut and could not finish the session, while an initial report identified the issue as involving his right foot or ankle.
The Patriots remained cautious the following day. Executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf said Henderson would not practice Tuesday while the club continued evaluating the injury. Christopher Price of The Boston Globe reported that Henderson was walking and moving normally while undergoing precautionary tests.
That caution continued into Thursday’s preseason finale against the Cleveland Browns. Henderson did not travel with the team, although he had not been expected to play even before the injury.
The latest report is significantly more encouraging. Price reported Thursday that a league source said Henderson avoided a serious right ankle injury and should be “good to go” for Week 1.
How Long Will Henderson Be Out, and Will He Play Week 1?
There is no official return date because New England has not announced a specific recovery timetable. Henderson has already missed practice time, but the current expectation is that the absence will not extend into the regular season.
The Patriots open Sept. 9 at Seattle in a Super Bowl LX rematch, giving Henderson roughly two weeks from the injury to recover. His participation when New England resumes regular-season practices will offer the clearest confirmation, but the latest report points toward him being available.

That would preserve one of the league’s more intriguing backfield pairings. Henderson rushed for 911 yards and nine touchdowns on 180 carries as a rookie, adding 35 receptions for 221 yards and another score. His 78.7 PFN RB Impact grade ranked 11th among qualifying running backs for the 2025 regular season.
Rhamondre Stevenson remains heavily involved after leading the Patriots’ backfield during their playoff run, so Henderson is not returning to a guaranteed every-down role. Still, his explosiveness gives New England a different dimension after he averaged 5.1 yards per carry and produced four rushing touchdowns of at least 50 yards as a rookie.
For now, the Patriots appear to have avoided the worst-case scenario. Henderson’s ankle still needs time, but the latest indication is that Week 1 remains firmly within reach.
