Enes Kanter’s courtside appearance at the Indiana Fever-Chicago Sky game on Sunday quickly turned into another chapter in the WNBA’s growing transgender-athlete controversy.
The former NBA player was ejected after a heated confrontation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud. Within minutes, the sports world was arguing over whether Kanter had been unfairly removed or had simply crossed the line from protest into disruption.

Kanter was sitting along the baseline at Wintrust Arena when the confrontation unfolded late in the third quarter. After Cloud scored inside with 1:22 remaining, Indiana called a timeout.
Cloud then moved toward Kanter, who took a step onto the court before security and Sky players stepped between them. The former NBA center was subsequently escorted from the court area.

The scene carried extra weight because Kanter has spent the past few weeks deliberately inserting himself into the WNBA’s debate over transgender athletes. He recently declared himself eligible for the 2027 WNBA Draft, saying he had reviewed the league’s eligibility guidelines.
His move followed Sophie Cunningham’s comments opposing transgender participation in women’s sports and has turned Kanter into another prominent voice in the controversy.
Before the game, he posted a photo of a shirt reading, “WOMAN: noun” and “adult human female,” while taking a jab at the league in the caption: “Careful what you wish for, @WNBA. Freedom of speech never looked this good. Somehow controversial.”

After his ejection, Kanter framed the moment as a win for his cause.
“I just got kicked out of a @WNBA game for supporting WOMEN! Let that sink in, AMERICA!” he posted on X.
That framing immediately set social media ablaze, with users weighing in on whether he deserved to be ejected.
Media personality Benny Johnson called the incident “absolutely INSANE,” writing:

YouTuber Jon Root mocked Cloud, writing:
“Natasha Cloud, who won’t admit a dude can’t become a woman, crashing out on Enes Kanter Freedom sitting courtside during the Fever vs Sky game, is hilarious 🤣”
Reporter Eric Daugherty was even more forceful in defending Kanter:

The Pro America Politics X account also blasted the league, declaring:

However, not everyone viewed him as the victim.
Columnist Jason Page attacked the former NBA player directly, asserting:
“Is there a bigger piece of [expletive] right now then @EnesFreedom? I mean seriously. Enes Kanter had to make himself the center of attention in a really entertaining game between the Fever and Sky tonight. This is indefensible on every level. And anyone defending it is equally as [expletive].”

X user Andy Froemel argued that Kanter’s treatment was inconsistent with how other fans are handled:
“Enes Kanter gets ejected because Natasha Cloud is unhappy, but Brandin Podziemski literally is allowed to follow Caitlin Clark up and down the sideline. Kanter only got thrown out because the WNBA is mad he exposed their support for men in women’s sports. This is political discrimination against fans.”
Barstool Sports’ Dave Portnoy weighed in with a balanced take and said he personally opposes transgender athletes competing in girls’ sports but still called Kanter “an absolute clown for making this issue about him,” arguing that the focus should have remained on Caitlin Clark’s 37-point, 10-assist double-double.

Podcaster Pablo Torre also criticized Kanter, adding:
“I think we can all agree that stepping out toward the baseline in the middle of a WNBA game, getting ejected on purpose, and immediately claiming to be a victim is insanely pathetic.”
While the argument raged around the arena, the Fever quietly handled business on the court. Indiana rolled to a 113-90 victory, snapping its two-game losing streak.
Clark posted the fifth 30-point, 10-assist game of her career, helping Indiana secure a much-needed win.
But the final score quickly became secondary to what happened along the baseline.
Kanter’s ejection added another combustible moment to an already heated debate surrounding the WNBA. The Fever got the result they wanted, but once again, the controversy surrounding transgender athletes produced a louder conversation.
