NFL Analyst Calls for Patriots to Bench Drake Maye for Joshua Dobbs After MVP Runner-Up’s Struggles in Super Bowl

A poor Super Bowl showing by Drake Maye sparked talk of a possible benching.

Super Bowl 60 has not been kind to Drake Maye and the New England Patriots’ offense.

Maye has struggled in the game and has not looked anywhere near the player who finished second in NFL MVP voting. The poor play has one NFL analyst calling for Maye’s benching in favor of Joshua Dobbs.

Drake Mayes’ Poor Play Leads to Benching Discussion

Due to Maye’s poor play, NFL analyst Skip Bayless has called for the sophomore quarterback to be benched in favor of a more seasoned quarterback like Dobbs. Bayless posted the following on social media:

“Josh Dobbs?”

Other notable media personalities, such as former Super Bowl champion Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, pointed out how Maye looks rattled and has not been able to get into a proper comfort zone.

He also noted that it is tough for him to settle in against Seattle’s defense, which ranked third in PFSN’s NFL Defensive Impact Metric with an impact score of 88.4 and a letter grade of B+.

In PFSN’s NFL Quarterback Impact Metric, Maye was the second-best quarterback in the NFL with an impact score of 91.1 and a letter grade of A-. In 17 games this season, Maye completed a league-high 72.0% of his passes for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. Additionally, he rushed for 450 yards and 4 touchdowns on 103 attempts.

The Patriots’ offense was one of the best in the league this season. They ranked second with an impact score of 86.6 and a letter grade of B in PFSN’s NFL Offensive Impact Metric.

The postseason struggles are nothing new for Maye and have been a constant source of weakness. In three games, Maye has completed 55.8% of his passes for 533 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions.

Additionally, he has added 141 rushing yards and one touchdown. However, Maye has fumbled six times in the 2025 playoffs and recovered only half of them.

But is the alternative option of Dobbs really better than the struggling Maye? In his career, Dobbs has played for six teams, never fully proving himself as a starter. He has a career completion percentage of 62.8%, 3,346 passing yards, and 17 passing touchdowns, along with 15 interceptions.

Additionally, he has run for 515 yards on 110 attempts. He has scored eight times but also fumbled nine times, losing three of them.

While it is possible the Patriots could benefit from a quarterback change, it is unlikely Dobbs would give the team the extra spark needed to edge out the Seahawks.
