Alabama has long dominated Vanderbilt, but last season flipped the script. Then ranked No. 1, Alabama was stunned by the Commodores in a historic upset, fueled by off-field drama. Former coach Nick Saban had even made dismissive comments about Vanderbilt, sparking more motivation for the underdog.
Though Kalen DeBoer was coaching, Saban’s remarks cast a shadow. Before this year’s rematch, though, Saban apologized on ESPN’s College GameDay, admitting that his comments may have added bulletin board material. Still, Saban appeared visibly unsettled during the game, a rare sight for the legendary coach that didn’t go unnoticed.
Tense Moments for Nick Saban despite Alabama’s Victory Over Vanderbilt
No. 8 Alabama is now 4–1 after a 30–14 win over Vanderbilt this past Saturday, easing the mounting pressure on second-year coach DeBoer. The season began with a brutal loss to Florida State, which intensified scrutiny of DeBoer’s leadership and raised concerns about whether Alabama could maintain Saban’s gold standard.
Under Saban’s 17-year tenure, the Crimson Tide lost only four games to unranked opponents. DeBoer had already matched that total. Many argued that the team lacked the discipline, consistency, and edge that defined the Saban era.
However, Alabama’s recent ability to bounce back has shifted the narrative. The win against Vanderbilt added another tick to the win column and helped restore some confidence in DeBoer’s leadership.
Before the game, Saban was honored for his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, and the crowd went wild.

But despite the celebration, Saban looked visibly uncomfortable throughout the game. In a clip shared by Pat McAfee on X, the analyst pointed out how fans kept turning to Saban for reactions after every major play. This clearly unsettled the legendary coach, even as Alabama performed well.
How Is Kalen DeBoer Comparing To Nick Saban’s Legacy?
The pressure DeBoer faces is unlike any other in college football. Saban’s Alabama legacy includes six national championships and 206 career wins, and the expectations in Tuscaloosa remain sky-high.
However, DeBoer is quietly building a résumé that demands respect. He holds a 13–2 record in ranked vs. ranked matchups, giving him the highest win percentage (.867) among coaches with at least 10 such games.

When expanded to all games against ranked opponents, regardless of whether his team was ranked, DeBoer stands at 17–3 (.842), spanning his time at Fresno State, Washington, and Alabama. Saban’s win rate against ranked teams during his Alabama tenure is .740 across 17 seasons.
DeBoer’s only two losses in ranked matchups came in the 2023 national title game, where his Washington team fell to No. 1 Michigan, and in 2024 when Alabama lost to No. 11 Tennessee.
With numbers like these, DeBoer isn’t just surviving the pressure; he’s thriving in it and carving out a legacy that could one day rival the man he replaced.
