Jets QB Justin Fields Drops 1-Word Reaction to Garrett Wilson’s Historic $130 Million Contract

Justin Fields is ecstatic as his former No. 1 target Garrett Wilson receives a massive four-year, $130 million deal from the New York Jets.

One person was happier than most when the New York Jets locked up Garrett Wilson with a massive $130 million contract. Justin Fields, the quarterback about to reunite with his former Ohio State teammate, couldn’t contain his excitement about securing his favorite target for years to come.

What Did Justin Fields Say About Garrett Wilson’s Historic Deal?

Wilson’s contract includes $90 million in guarantees, making him the first receiver in history to receive an average of over $31 million per year after just three seasons in the league. The deal goes into effect in 2027, with Wilson earning $6.5 million in 2025 before collecting $16.8 million on his fifth-year option in 2026.

Fields, who signed his own two-year deal worth $40 million earlier in free agency, was thrilled for his favorite pass catcher.

“Yessirr,” Fields wrote on his Instagram story.

The excitement makes sense when you consider their history. Wilson was Fields’ favorite target while at Ohio State, where they spent two seasons together. Fields was in contention to win the Heisman Trophy but finished third in voting, and he’s hoping they can strike similar chemistry in New York.

How Will Fields and Wilson Rebuild Their College Chemistry?

The quarterback knows they’ll need to work to get back to their college form. “There’s things we can do to help each other get better and get back on the same page as we were in college,” said Fields about how he and Wilson can reestablish chemistry.

“Of course, communicate, make sure we’re always on the same page when it comes to concepts, and routes, and what he’s doing in certain situations. I’m definitely excited to be back on the field with him, for sure.”

Their two seasons together at Ohio State were memorable. Fields and Wilson are perhaps best remembered for a magical mid-air catch Wilson pulled off on a throw from Fields against Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl. In total, they connected 66 times for 1,031 yards and nine touchdowns.

However, there are questions about how Fields will fit into the Jets’ offense since he is a unique player. Fields is well known for his ability to run and escape from defenders. During his single season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he showed improvement despite only starting in six games.

PFSN’s QB+ metric for 2024 gave Fields a grade of 78.1, a C+. That grade was better than what his teammate Russell Wilson (75.3) received for his time under center.

Fields hopes to catch lightning in a bottle with Wilson and the Jets. While his talent is undisputed, he lacks the consistency an NFL team needs. A quarterback rarely gets a third shot at being a starter, and Fields needs to make the best out of it if he doesn’t want to be relegated to a backup role.

Meanwhile, Wilson has been one of the lone bright spots for the Jets since the franchise selected him tenth overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. While New York has failed to win more than seven games in any of Wilson’s three seasons and consistently been one of the worst offenses in the league, the former Ohio State star has recorded at least 1,000 yards in each year.
