49ers Insider Reveals Jauan Jennings’ Surprising Training Camp Decision Amid Contract Drama

Following a breakout 2024 season, San Francisco 49ers' wide receiver Jauan Jennings has made a shocking request that could shake up the 49ers receiver room.

The clock is ticking toward training camp, and Kyle Shanahan’s San Francisco 49ers face a familiar challenge: keeping their stars happy while managing the salary cap. This time, it’s Jauan Jennings who’s demanding attention, and his timing couldn’t be more strategic.

With Deebo Samuel Jr. now in Washington and Brandon Aiyuk still recovering from his torn ACL, Jennings holds all the cards. The question isn’t whether he deserves a new deal after his breakout 2024-25 campaign; it’s whether the 49ers can afford to lose him, too.

What Does Jauan Jennings Want From the 49ers?

Jennings stepped up when the 49ers needed him most during the 2024-25 season. With injuries decimating the skill positions, he seized his opportunity and delivered a career year. Now he wants to get paid for it.

According to 49ers insider Matt Barrows, Jennings has requested a contract extension from general manager John Lynch and the organization. However, the 28-year-old receiver is expected to report to training camp without a new deal in place.

The situation puts Jennings in a strong negotiating position. He’s currently in the final year of a two-year extension worth $15,390,000 that he signed in 2024. Originally expected to be third on the receiver depth chart, Jennings instead became their top target during the 2024-25 season.

His production speaks for itself: a career-high 77 catches, 975 yards, and six touchdowns. Those numbers led all 49ers pass catchers, proving he’s no longer just a depth piece but a legitimate NFL starter who deserves starter money.

Why Do the 49ers Need Jennings More Than Ever?

The 49ers find themselves in a precarious position at wide receiver. Samuel’s recent trade to the Commanders left a significant hole in the offense, while Aiyuk continues his recovery from the ACL tear he suffered in October 2024.

This depleted receiving corps could thrust Jennings into the WR1 role to start the 2025-26 season. His main competition comes from sophomore receiver Ricky Pearsall, setting up a battle during training camp that will determine the team’s offensive hierarchy.

From a business perspective, Jennings’ approach makes complete sense. He’s proven himself as a reliable NFL receiver over his four seasons with the 49ers. Even if San Francisco chooses not to pay him, other teams would certainly benefit from trading for the disgruntled receiver.

The 49ers did add depth through the draft, selecting Jordan Watkins from Ole Miss and Junior Bergen from Montana in the fourth and seventh rounds, respectively. Both rookies represent potential replacements if they impress during camp.

However, with Aiyuk’s return timeline still uncertain, the 49ers remain thin at NFL-ready receivers. Jennings knows this reality gives him leverage in negotiations, whether that leads to a new contract or a trade to a team willing to pay him what he believes he’s worth.

The next few weeks will determine whether Jennings gets his payday in San Francisco or starts fresh elsewhere. After his breakout 2024-25 campaign, he’s made it clear: he expects to be compensated accordingly, and he’s willing to leave if the 49ers won’t meet his demands.
