‘I Think About It 24/7’ — 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall Opens Up About Tragic Accident That Nearly Took His Life

After surviving a near-fatal shooting, 49ers receiver Ricky Pearsall is poised for a breakout 2025 season and inspiring comeback.

On what should’ve been a celebratory day in San Francisco, Ricky Pearsall’s life was nearly cut short. He was shot in the chest during a daytime armed robbery attempt close to Union Square, putting the young wide receiver in a potentially fatal situation just months into his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers.

Rickey Pearsall Opens Up About Surviving Life-Threatening Robbery in San Francisco

The day began like any other for Pearsall, but near Union Square, everything changed. In broad daylight, he was confronted by a 17-year-old armed suspect demanding his chain and watch. A struggle broke out, and in an instant, a gunshot rang out.

“It was so quick,” Pearsall told NBC Sports Bay Area. “I just got in that fight-or-flight mentality, man, like something I’ve never experienced before. I think about it 24/7. You know what I mean? There’s not a single day that goes by where I don’t think about it, just because it is something that’s very global.”

The fact that the bullet entered Pearsall’s chest and did not strike any bones or important organs would be considered miraculous by a number of doctors. Pearsall managed to stay aware and even walked toward an ambulance with first responders; this incident was later caught on camera and extensively shared.

However, a stranger, Sgt. Joelle Harrell of the San Francisco Police Department, provided Pearsall with the sense of peace. She prayed with him, knelt next to him and relieved him of the burden of fear.

Pearsall was released from the hospital less than twenty-four hours later. But it would take a lot longer for the body, mind, and emotions to heal.

Pearsall’s Remarkable Comeback and New Role in the 49ers’ Offense

One of the 49ers’ most motivational storylines of the 2024 season was what transpired next. Pearsall made a comeback and participated in the final 11 games after missing the first six on the non-football injury list. He had back-to-back standout performances to end the season, finishing his rookie campaign with 31 receptions, 400 yards and three touchdowns. But the numbers only tell part of the story.

Although Pearsall had always loved football, it now had a deeper meaning. It meant having a purpose, living and gratitude.

That goal becomes even more clear as he enters his second season. Pearsall is anticipated to contribute significantly to the 49ers’ offense now that wideout Deebo Samuel is in Washington, not just as a receiver but also as a leader.

From an almost catastrophic event to an incredible comeback, Pearsall’s journey is about more than simply football. Resilience, grace, and the conviction that life occasionally offers you another chance are key components.
