The story of the Dallas Cowboys’ 2025 season was simple. A bad defense wasted one of the best years of quarterback Dak Prescott’s career, and in a year where the division-winning Philadelphia Eagles won just 11 games, the Cowboys came up 3.5 games short.
Fixing this defense is Dallas’ top priority, and that starts at the top. The Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and, on Thursday, named his replacement, Christian Parker.
Dallas Cowboys Receive Praise for Christian Parker Hire
Parker joined the Dallas staff after two years with the rival Eagles, where he was the passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. He’s largely viewed as a quick-rising defensive mind, and the NFL world took notice.
Whether it’s Cowboys fans, media members, or Eagles stars, the approval rating of the Harris hire seems nearly unanimous.
“The Eagles and Vic Fangio are losing their right hand man of their defense,” James Palmer posted on X. “Christian Parker has really impressed the last couple of seasons to coaches around the league. A really smart up and up and coming defensive mind will now be running the Cowboys defense per source.”

Dallas gave up 30+ points on nine separate occasions. In the wake of the Micah Parsons trade, the Cowboys didn’t generate the pressure to compensate for weaknesses on the back end.
Parker’s experience as a defensive back coach could foster necessary development, especially as Dallas turns over the back seven on defense.
“A meteoric rise for Christian Parker, who broke into the NFL as a defensive quality control coach with the Packers in 2019,” Tom Pelissero added. “Seven years later, he’s expected to be the new DC for the Cowboys.”

Notably, Philadelphia will feel this loss. Parker was an integral part of the Eagles’ defensive infrastructure, earning praise from standouts like cornerback Cooper DeJean. DeJean posted, “Mannnn. They got a great one, wouldn’t be the player I am without CP.”

Dallas was dead last in the NFL per PFSN’s NFL Defense Impact Metrics. By comparison, the Eagles ranked seventh, in large part due to the sixth-most interceptions (20). “From what I’ve heard throughout the process, Christian Parker absolutely nailed the interview process,” John Owning said. “Rose to the top of the preferred list quickly.”

Parker looks the part of a home run hire, and this decision could play a significant role in head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s future. He showed positive signs in Year 1 before being undone by his defense, and a second swing-and-miss at defensive coordinator would be an indictment of his skills as a head coach.

“Love this so much,” RJ Ochoa said. “Respect to the Cowboys for doing this right. This offseason is officially one of hope now.”

Part of the Eberflus hire may have been influenced by his experience as a head coach, offering a staff with a rookie leading the way. With a year under his belt, Schottenheimer can take advantage of a younger hire’s upward momentum, setting the tone for next year’s defense and giving the Dallas faithful a reason to be optimistic about 2026.
