‘That’s Impressive,’ ‘She Barely Scores Over 3 Points’ — WNBA World Clashes Over Viral Sophie Cunningham Stat

Fever star Sophie Cunningham's WNBA-best 3-point shooting mark sparks a flood of mixed reactions.

It’s been a rough few weeks for Sophie Cunningham in the headlines. The Indiana Fever guard has been at the center of a firestorm, with protests springing up both for and against her after she took a stand against trans athletes competing in women’s sports last month.

Now, a single stat has ignited debate about her on-court value.

Viral Sophie Cunningham Stat Divides WNBA World

On Tuesday, the Real App took to X to highlight Cunningham’s remarkable outside shooting, noting that the Fever guard leads the WNBA in 3-point percentage at 45.8%.

The statistic quickly made its way across social media, and the reactions from the WNBA world came flooding in.

Since late July, Cunningham has been at the center of a heated WNBA debate after saying she wanted to protect young girls from competing against biological men. Her 3-point proficiency gave supporters a reason to shift the conversation back to basketball.

“That’s impressive,” an X user said, whereas another commented, “Haters awful quiet!!”

Cunningham is currently averaging 8.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists across 35 games. That has led some fans to wonder how she has managed to reach such an impressive shooting mark.

“This [is] hilarious. She barely scores over 3 points,” an X user said, whereas another commented, “She’s averaging 8.8 points per game this season! She’s only shooting 3 shots per game.”

Some reactions leaned into the political undertone of the moment.

“Good to see a biological woman leading a WNBA stat. May that always be the case,” one user said.

According to ESPN’s official stats chart, Cunningham currently sits atop the WNBA in 3-point percentage. Interestingly, however, Real’s own app tells a different story. While Real highlighted Cunningham’s 45.8% mark on its social media, its app ranks her seventh in the same category.

The app lists Mackenzie Holmes first at 60%, followed by Chennedy Carter at 52.4%, Emma Cannon at 50%, and Julie Vanloo at 50%, tied for fourth, and Napheesa Collier and Mai Yamamoto tied for fifth at 47.4%.

The difference is likely because some of those players do not meet the minimum qualification required for official league statistical rankings. One user was quick to notice the discrepancy and pointed it out, adding an interesting twist to Cunningham’s viral stat.

“Your own app disagrees,” the user wrote, while also posting a screenshot from the app.

With the WNBA world split between praising the achievement and questioning its significance, Cunningham’s latest statistical feat has once again managed to turn her into one of the WNBA’s biggest talking points.
