The Indiana Fever can’t catch a break this season. Despite their 19-16 record, injuries keep piling up, testing their depth at every turn. The latest blow came when Sophie Cunningham suffered a devastating knee injury during the August 17 matchup with the Connecticut Sun, ending her season alongside Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald, who were lost after the August 7 clash against the Phoenix Mercury.
Yet even from the sidelines, Cunningham is keeping fans updated on the team’s biggest concern: when will their superstar return?
What Did Sophie Cunningham Reveal About Caitlin Clark’s Recovery?
During the latest episode of the “Show Me Something Sophie Cunningham & West Wilson” podcast, Cunningham provided the most detailed update yet on Caitlin Clark’s injury status. Her message was clear: nobody knows when Clark will be back, not even Clark herself.
“I don’t know. Everyone keeps asking, everyone’s like, ‘you know’, and I’m like literally she doesn’t even know. It’s just like a day-by-day, legit type of thing. And so, she’s close, but like you also have to remember, like she could be playing if it wasn’t in the WNBA by now,” Cunningham explained.
The reality, according to Cunningham, is that the WNBA’s elite level demands perfection. “But like at this level, with how deep and, like, how good people are nowadays in our league, which is the best it’s ever been. You can’t just be good. You have to be on top of your game. And so, just trying to get her back in game shape, I think, is what they’re trying to do. But, like, again, it’s literally day by day. I’m not holding out any information. I just literally don’t know,” said Cunningham during the podcast.
Clark’s injury troubles have been relentless this season. Between a lingering left quadriceps strain and recurring groin problems, she’s missed a staggering 22 games, including the Commissioner’s Cup matchup against the Minnesota Lynx. The absence has been devastating for a player averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, and five rebounds per game before the setbacks.
How Did Caitlin Clark’s Latest Injury Happen?
Clark’s last appearance was on July 15 against the Connecticut Sun, in which she contributed 14 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. The Fever won that game, but it came at a crushing cost.
Late in the fourth quarter, after delivering a pass to Kelsey Mitchell, Clark jogged up the floor before suddenly clutching the side of her right leg. The non-contact injury left everyone in the arena stunned as she hunched over in visible pain.
Teammate Aliyah Boston quickly rushed to help, but Clark’s frustration boiled over. She pushed forward, hitting her head lightly against the basket support before heading to the bench, her anguish visible to everyone watching.
Great angle here from Erik Dobratz of Caitlin Clark’s anguish after an apparent injury. Coach Steph White told @chloepeterson67 that Clark, “felt a little something in her groin”. Clark’s being evaluated.

That moment captured everything about Clark’s season: brilliance cut short by her body’s inability to keep up with her competitive drive.
What Is Head Coach Stephanie White’s Timeline for Clark’s Return?
While Cunningham couldn’t provide a definitive timeline during her podcast appearance, head coach Stephanie White offered cautious optimism before Sunday’s game. White indicated that Clark is expected to return before the regular season ends, but emphasized the team’s commitment to doing things right this time.
“I think just the experience throughout the year, trying to come back and come back quickly, has also taught her that she needs to make sure that she’s 100 percent. And, yes, every competitor wants to play,” White explained.
“But at the same time, doing it the right way and making sure after we’ve had a couple setbacks, that we’re prioritizing her long-term health and wellness is the most important thing,” said White during the interview.
The coach’s approach reflects lessons learned from previous failed comeback attempts. Rather than rush Clark back and risk another setback, the Fever are taking the long view, even if it means more uncertainty in the short term.
For now, Indiana fans are stuck in limbo. With multiple stars sidelined and their franchise player’s return date unknown, the Fever face an uphill battle to maintain their playoff position. The team that started the season with championship aspirations now hopes its core players can simply make it back healthy before the season ends.
