Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has become perhaps the WNBA’s most outspoken player. She has a new platform: her podcast with Summer House’s West Wilson, “Show Me Something,” where she has voiced her opinions on the current state of the game.
Cunningham has expressed her displeasure with the league’s officiating in the past. She has seen her reactions to foul calls go viral, clashed with former teammates, and been fined for criticizing WNBA officials.
Sophie Cunningham Suffers Injury Against Connecticut Sun
In Sunday’s matchup between the Fever and Connecticut Sun, Cunningham went down with an injury of her own.
Sun guard Bria Hartley fell and hit the side of Cunningham’s leg trying to make a pass. Cunningham grabbed her leg and got to the baseline before falling to the floor. You could see her grab her knee and yell in pain.

“Fever confirm it’s a right knee injury for Cunningham,” said Brian Haenchen of the Indianapolis Star. “She is out for the remainder of the game.”
Of course, the Fever are already missing star Caitlin Clark, who is expected to remain out at least another few days and could make her return later this month. They have already lost guards Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald to season-ending injuries, so this is just another one of many hits to the Fever’s backcourt depth.
Despite those losses, the reactions following the play have revolved around Cunningham’s former spats with officials, and one of those closest to her came to her defense following the play.
Sophie Cunningham’s Sister, Lindsey, Slams WNBA Officials
Cunningham’s sister, Lindsey, was very upset after her sibling’s injury and took to social media to express her displeasure.
“[WNBA] maybe you should focus less on fining players for commenting on your poor officiating & more about hiring officials that are able to call a consistent game and protect your athletes. Pathetic. Praying for you [Sophie Cunningham],” she said following the play.
Obviously, the sisters are going to have each other’s back but with all of the controversy surrounding the WNBA’s officiating, specifically involving accusations of dirty play, often by Cunningham herself, comments like this are certainly worth paying attention to, especially as the league is trying to reach the next level in terms of fan support and television ratings.
Like her sister, Lindsey played at Missouri, appearing in 129 games in her career, just two shy of the program record. She currently serves as an assistant in the Missouri women’s basketball program.
The Fever has not given any further updates on Cunningham’s condition.
