‘It’s Overwhelming’ — Mercury Star Alyssa Thomas Shares Emotional Reaction to First-Ever Triple-Double in Phoenix

Alyssa Thomas records her first triple-double with the Phoenix Mercury, posting 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 15 assists in a commanding win.

Alyssa Thomas has long been known for rewriting what it means to be a point-forward in the WNBA. Her triple-doubles are not just statistical achievements; they’re structural disruptions to how teams are forced to defend. Now in a Phoenix Mercury jersey, she’s beginning to do the same in the desert.

After 11 standout seasons with the Connecticut Sun, Thomas entered the 2025 campaign as the WNBA’s all-time leader in triple-doubles, already holding a record 15 to her name. Yet questions lingered about her replicating that all-around dominance in a new system. On Sunday night in Phoenix, wearing a new jersey but displaying her signature versatility, Thomas responded strongly with her 16th career triple-double, silencing any doubts about her adaptability.

Alyssa Thomas Records First Triple-Double with Phoenix Mercury

Thomas delivered a full-court masterclass in her first triple-double as a member of the Phoenix Mercury, tallying 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 15 assists in a commanding 102–72 victory over the Dallas Wings on July 7. With the performance, Thomas notched the 16th triple-double of her WNBA career, extending her league record and proving she remains one of the most complete players in the game.

Phoenix fans roared as the crowd pushed Thomas down the stretch. She appreciated the support of the fans while her voice overflowed with emotion. In the post-game conference, she said, “To have the crowd behind me cheering you on like that, it’s overwhelming.”

Thomas has adjusted seamlessly to Phoenix following her February trade from the Connecticut Sun, where expectations ran high. Through early July, she’s averaging 14.4 points, 9.8 assists, and 7.5 rebounds in 14 games for the Mercury, taking her career high across the board.

Thomas’s 15–10–15 performance marked her league-leading 16th career triple-double, further widening the gap between her and every other player in WNBA history. She now stands alone atop the all-time list, a rarefied milestone few have come close to. During her tenure with the Connecticut Sun, Thomas amassed 15 triple-doubles, including two in the 2022 WNBA Finals, becoming one of the only players to record multiple triple-doubles on the league’s biggest stage.

Phoenix head coach Nate Tibbetts has retooled the offense around Thomas’s strengths. With improved spacing, Mercury is attempting 30 threes per game this season, while Thomas’s driving game and court vision have become even more lethal. Her 53% field-goal rate while on court is among the top figures in the league.

As the regular season nears its midpoint, the Mercury sit near the top of the standings, riding on Thomas’s peak-level play. The Phoenix nucleus, alongside Satou Sabally and Kahleah Copper, appears prepared for a playoff run.

With her first Phoenix triple‑double secured, Thomas has signaled the start of a defining chapter in her career. She’s poised to challenge for MVP honors and push the Mercury deep into postseason contention. If this performance is any indication, Phoenix’s march toward a championship could hinge on Thomas’s next-level leadership.
