Hope was running high in Indiana during the 2025 season. After suffering an early playoff exit in 2024, Fever fans were eager for a fresh start, especially when the team finally found its rhythm after a rough stretch and pushed its record to 19-16 with eyes on a playoff berth.
However, not every successful run comes without setbacks. The Fever battled their share of injuries throughout the campaign. The squad was dealt another devastating blow when Sophie Cunningham was ruled out for the remainder of the season following a knee injury that left teammates and fans heartbroken.
One of Cunningham’s teammates stepped forward with a heartfelt message that captured the team’s bond during this difficult time.
How Did Caitlin Clark Support Sophie Cunningham After the Injury?
Following the injury announcement, social media quickly flooded with messages of support. Among them was an emotional response from Cunningham’s teammate, Caitlin Clark. The former Iowa star took to Instagram and reshared the team’s official post about Cunningham’s injury.
She added her own heartfelt four-word message, reading, “Love you always, Soph.”

The injury occurred during Sunday’s matchup against the Connecticut Sun. In the second quarter, while defending a drive to the basket, Cunningham collided awkwardly with Bria Hartley. The impact caught her right leg at an unnatural angle.
Cunningham immediately clutched her knee in pain, and trainers had to help her off the court. Although she remained on the bench for the rest of the game, she was unable to return to action.

Before her season-ending injury, Cunningham averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game. She had become a reliable contributor for the Fever during their push toward the playoffs.
Just one day after the accident, Cunningham had posted a cheerful carousel on Instagram, sharing snapshots of her August moments. That post gave many fans hope that any injury she sustained wouldn’t be serious. Regardless, the announcement that she would miss the rest of the season came as a shock to Fever fans.
What Challenges Is Caitlin Clark Facing This Season?
Clark herself has not experienced the smoothest campaign this year. She has struggled with various injuries, including a left quadriceps strain and persistent groin issues, which have forced her to miss the last 13 games.
Before her injuries sidelined her, Clark averaged 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, and five rebounds per game. According to Fever Head Coach Stephanie White, Clark is expected to return before the regular season concludes.
“That’s the hope. That’s the hope is that she’ll be back,” said White during Sunday’s pregame interview.
The 48-year-old head coach also hinted that the team is prioritizing Clark’s long-term health over rushing her back to action.
“I think just the experience throughout the year, trying to come back and come back quickly, has also taught her that she needs to make sure that she’s 100 percent. And, yes, every competitor wants to play,” White explained.
“But at the same time, doing it the right way and making sure after we’ve had a couple setbacks, that we’re prioritizing her long-term health and wellness is the most important thing,” added White during the interview.
Now, with Cunningham ruled out for the season and Clark still working her way back to full health, the Fever will rely heavily on stars like Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston to carry the load.
The team’s depth will be tested as they push toward their playoff goals during the final stretch of the 2025 campaign. As of Tuesday, August 19, the Fever have nine games remaining before the playoffs begin in September.
