The Indiana Fever had so much promise entering the 2024-25 WNBA season, but heartbreak keeps finding this team. The latest blow came Tuesday with news that would crush any championship dreams still alive in Indianapolis.
How Will Sophie Cunningham’s Season-Ending Injury Impact the Indiana Fever’s Playoff Push?
On Tuesday afternoon (August 19), the Indiana Fever issued a statement that delivered devastating news to fans. Guard Sophie Cunningham will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 WNBA season after suffering a right knee injury during Sunday’s game against the Connecticut Sun (August 17). The team also announced it would sign veteran guard Shey Peddy on a 7-day hardship contract and waive guard Kyra Lambert.
The announcement sent shockwaves through the Fever fanbase, who flooded social media with their emotions. Trent Harvey captured the collective feeling in a simple but powerful post: “Absolutely tragic. This team has suffered so much.”

The frustration extended beyond the injury itself. ShadBoogie voiced what many fans were thinking, posting alongside a GIF of Denzel Washington as Malcolm X: “This season had so much promise coming in, and it’s just been a disaster throughout, tbh.”

What Exactly Happened During the Play That Ended Cunningham’s Season?
The injury occurred during the second quarter of Sunday’s matchup with Connecticut. Cunningham was defending Sun player Bria Hartley when Hartley fell after making a pass to a teammate. As Hartley went down, she rolled onto the outside of Cunningham’s right knee.
The impact was immediate and devastating. Cunningham grabbed her knee, tried to hobble away, then collapsed near the baseline in obvious pain. Fever staff members helped her to the locker room, and she never returned to the game.
After the game, head coach Stephanie White told reporters that Cunningham would undergo an MRI on Monday (August 18) to determine the extent of the injury. While the team hasn’t released specific details about the diagnosis, sports injury specialist Dr. Brian Sutterer analyzed the play on YouTube and suggested it could be either a kneecap dislocation or an MCL tear, according to Sports Illustrated.
The lack of a foul call on the play added fuel to fan frustration. Jan Mariolle expressed this sentiment directly: “I’m sorry, Sophie. Maybe this league will do something about inconsistent reffing so we don’t lose our favorite players early in the season.”

However, some fans went too far by suggesting Hartley intentionally targeted Cunningham. Former WNBA player and coach Val Whiting shut down that narrative quickly and decisively: “I’m very disappointed to see the narrative floating around that Bria Hartley intentionally hurt Sophie Cunningham. This is ridiculous and stupid. Stop it.”

Cunningham, who celebrated her 29th birthday just one day before the injury on Saturday (August 16), acknowledged the outpouring of fans’ support on social media.
Can the Indiana Fever Still Make a Deep Playoff Run Without Cunningham?
Cunningham’s loss deals a significant blow to the Fever’s postseason aspirations. Currently sitting sixth in the WNBA standings at 19-16 with just five games remaining in the regular season, Indianapolis was hoping to secure a strong playoff position.
The timing couldn’t be worse for the Fever, who are already dealing with injury concerns surrounding star guard Caitlin Clark. According to IndyStar reporter Brian Haenchen, Clark didn’t travel with the team to Connecticut for Sunday’s game, instead focusing on recovering from a groin injury to help secure one of the top eight playoff spots.
With Cunningham done for the season and Clark’s status uncertain, the Fever face an uphill battle to not just make the playoffs, but make any meaningful noise once they get there. The addition of veteran Peddy provides some depth, but replacing Cunningham’s production and leadership will be nearly impossible.
