‘Over A’ja and Phee?’ — WNBA Fans in Disbelief After Angel Reese Wins Sportswoman of the Year at BET Awards

The Chicago Sky are experiencing one of their toughest stretches on the court, holding a 2-5 record after their recent loss to the Indiana Fever on Saturday. Meanwhile, their star forward, Angel Reese, is making headlines for winning the BET Sportswoman of the Year award.

Given her status as the Defensive Player of the Year, this award should leave no room for debate, but fans aren’t buying it. Many are actively questioning the fairness of the award system, wondering how Reese managed to secure the honor once again.

Angel Reese’s BET Win Over A’ja and Napheesa Sparks Shocking Fan Reactions

We are currently living in a time when award shows are losing the reputation they once had. Many recent award selections appear to contradict what fans truly believe, and the 2025 BET Awards are just another example of this. When the Sky forward won the BET Sportswoman of the Year honor for the third consecutive year, fans once again questioned the fairness of the selection process.

While some of Reese’s supporters celebrated her achievement, others criticized the selection system. Reactions on social media ranged from congratulations to frustration:

@cmpbPWMS24 commented, “Congratulations, Angel Reese! 👏🏽👍🏽 Keep on adding to your resumé! 😍🥰” However, not everyone was on board. @bbxjessie shared, “If she would stop running her mouth, she wouldn’t get as much hate. It’s laughable that she thinks she’s better than Clark.”

Many WNBA fans were shocked that Reese won over A’ja Wilson and Napheesa Collier, two of the league’s most dominant players. Some argued that Wilson and Collier had stronger seasons, making them more deserving of the award.

@King_JrII exclaimed, “What? Over A’ja and Phee?? 😂😂🔥 BET cooked.” @WolfOfWeedST bluntly added, “Why? She’s terrible.” @itsmee_rh questioned, “Why did Angel Reese win Sportswoman of the Year when she clearly has no sportsmanship?”

Following up, @iPHAYME simply asked: “Why not A’ja Wilson?” Meanwhile, @BranBran_Online reflected on the award show’s declining credibility, writing, “A’ja or Phee not playing? People wonder why nobody watches the BET Awards.”

Despite the backlash, she had a strong year. In her second WNBA season with the Sky, she averaged 9.1 points, 12.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. Additionally, she led Rose BC to a championship in the 2025 Unrivaled season, earning Defensive Player of the Year honors.

These massive achievements place her in an elite group, as she joins Serena Williams as the only athlete to win the BET Sportswoman of the Year award three times.

Despite all of that, we cannot deny that fan reactions have been highly critical of her. However, if she can help Chicago get off to a strong start this season, WNBA fans might not be as harsh on her.
