The 2026 NFL preseason officially kicks off tonight, Thursday, August 6, as the Carolina Panthers face the Arizona Cardinals in the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Game.
Broadcast live from Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio, this exhibition matchup opens the league’s 107th season. As head coaches prioritize player health and roster evaluation ahead of the regular season, fans tuning in will notice several key starters wearing baseball caps on the sidelines.
What Is Bryce Young’s Status for the NFL Preseason Opener Hall of Fame Game?
Panthers head coach Dave Canales confirmed earlier this week that Bryce Young will not play in tonight’s Hall of Fame Game.
With Young resting alongside top first-team starters, veteran quarterback Kenny Pickett will start under center for Carolina. Pickett, who joined the Panthers to secure the primary backup role, is scheduled to handle the opening series before giving way to undrafted rookie Haynes King.
Canales emphasized the value of live game reps for secondary depth while managing overall workload during training camp, saying: “We have a good number of non-starters that will be helping out early on in the game, just because we don’t want to overload any one particular group on our team.”
“We do have practices leading into the game, and we have practices coming out of it, so I felt that with a number of guys being out there, being able to take a couple of series will really help the whole group, and we just need the football,” Canales said. “So I’m excited about it, and Kenny is excited as well as the rest of the group, and they’ve been talking a lot about it.”

2026 Hall of Fame Game: Carolina Panthers vs Arizona Cardinals
Tonight’s exhibition marks Carolina’s second all-time appearance in Canton and Arizona’s sixth, dating back to the Cardinals’ participation in the inaugural 1962 contest. Both coaching staffs enter with heavily restricted workloads for key starters.
According to the PFN’s Offense Impact Metric, Carolina’s offense posted an impact score of 69.9 last season, ranking 26th in the league. As a result, the team needs significant improvement in that area to become a legitimate NFC contender.

Meanwhile, Arizona’s primary offseason focus is bolstering a defensive unit that ranked 29th in the league last season on PFN’s Defense Impact Rankings, making secondary-roster depth in Canton a top priority for first-year head coach Mike LaFleur.
While Carolina turns signal-calling duties over to Pickett and King, Arizona will rest veteran quarterbacks to evaluate reserve signal-callers Carson Beck and Kedon Slovis.
Tonight’s contest provides a critical live evaluation for lower-tier depth positions before mandatory roster cutdowns occur later this month. Both teams return to action next week for Preseason Week 1 matchups.
