Why Did the Giants Fire Brian Daboll? A Look at Why New York Cut Ties With Former HC

After less than 4 full seasons, why did the New York Giants fire Brian Daboll in the middle of the season after a Week 10 loss to the Chicago Bears?

Taking over as the head coach for the New York Giants in 2022, Brian Daboll spent a while with the organization, and even led them to a playoff appearance in his first year with the team. However, lackluster results in the last few seasons raised questions about the security of his job.

Finally, after a 2-8 start to the season, the organization had had enough. In a major move to reshape the future of the franchise, he was relieved of his duties after Week 10. However, beyond the record, a multitude of reasons contributed to what once felt shocking but eventually became an inevitable shakeup.

Reasons Behind the Brian Daboll Firing

The simple answer here is the record. In his first year, Daboll started the season with a 7-2 record and led the team to a playoff appearance for the first time since 2016. Unfortunately, that same success hasn’t translated since.

Over the last two years, the Giants have regularly been among the worst teams in the league in terms of record. This year, too, after making two selections in the first round, the desperation was evident from the organization.

Unless results finally came to pass, their head coach was in jeopardy of losing his job, which he eventually did. It was hard to place the fault at anyone’s feet but Daboll’s.

After choosing to pay Daniel Jones over Saquon Barkley, he had to bite the bullet less than two full seasons later. Unfortunately, even with a new-look roster, things didn’t take a turn for the better.

The entire 2025 season was marred by missteps from a veteran on the sidelines. Beginning the year with Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback, he shifted to rookie Jaxson Dart less than a month into the season.

Although things initially looked promising, Daboll was far from perfect. A reckless style repeatedly endangered what might be their long-term solution at quarterback, as Dart has been checked for a concussion four separate times this season.

According to PFSN’s Offense Impact metric, the Giants had the 26th-ranked offense in the league at the time of Daboll’s departure.

In those instances, Wilson has checked back into the game, leading to some truly hilarious but ridiculous behaviour from Daboll on the sideline. Barging into the medical tent may have been the worst of these offenses, as he was even fined for his transgression.

However, behind his attitude, the work in the field was also subpar. As the wheels of the operation spun with injuries left and right on the roster, a better-than-expected defense, and some excellent play from Dart had New York in several games they ultimately lost.

In fact, they lost a double-digit lead on the road on four separate occasions, with the Denver Broncos game and the Chicago Bears game serving as particularly grim readings. As a fan page explained on X, the magnitude of those losses was incomprehensible.

“Against the Cowboys, Broncos, and Bears, the Giants had a 92.3%, 99.3%, and 96.9% chance of winning in the 4th quarter. They lost all three games. The odds of that happening? 1 in 60,000.”

At some point, the team had to bite the bullet. Despite the collapses, their performance over the course of the game did showcase the talent on the roster, if utilized correctly. With a healthier squad next season, the right voice could lead to an exciting football season in New York.

Since Daboll’s departure, the Giants have failed to win any games, but they were competitive against the Green Bay Packers in Week 11 and the Detroit Lions in Week 12.

It might be a rough few months for Giants fans, but there is a high possibility that they will come out on the positive side of this.

New York Giants’ Insights for Week 13

Team: According to the PFSN Analytics, the Giants currently have a 13.7% chance of getting the first overall pick. A loss increases the chances to 20.0%, a win drops it to 4.4%.

QB: Jameis Winston posted a QBi of 80.7 (B-) against the Lions, which was the second-highest in Week 12. Winston had the fourth-best QBi (80.3, B-) of Week 11 in his first start.

Offense: The Giants are 0-5 on the road when they have at least a ten-point lead.

Defense: New York has allowed 31.7 points per game during its current six-game losing streak.

Fantasy: Tyrone Tracy has 23 touches in each of his last two games. He has 150 rushing yards over that span, both coming in bad matchups. Fantasy managers will now ask him to overcome yet another one against a Patriots defense that allows the fewest fantasy points per game to running backs.
