The Tennessee Titans are currently the worst team in the NFL, with a record of 1-11 this season, having beaten only the Arizona Cardinals several weeks ago. The team almost certainly won’t take a quarterback with their first-round pick, considering the team drafted Cam Ward first overall in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Ward has shown flashes of potential and can definitely be the team’s next franchise quarterback. The last consistent quarterback the team had before Ward was Ryan Tannehill. Here’s what Tannehill is currently up to.
What Happened to Ryan Tannehill?
Tannehill was drafted out of Texas A&M with the eighth overall pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. Tannehill is interesting because he played both wide receiver and quarterback in college, and posted meaningful statistics in both roles.
As a quarterback, he passed for 5450 yards, 42 touchdowns, 21 interceptions, 369 rushing yards, and five rushing touchdowns. As a receiver, he caught 112 passes for 1596 yards and 10 touchdowns. In 88 career games played with the Dolphins, Tannehill passed for 20,434 yards, 123 touchdowns, and 75 interceptions. As a runner, he carried the ball 247 times for 1,210 yards and six rushing touchdowns.
In 2019, Tannehill was traded to the Titans after spending several years with the Dolphins. The complete deal was Tannehill and a 2019 sixth-round pick for a 2020 fourth-round pick and a 2019 seventh-round pick.
Tannehill’s best season with the Titans came in 2020. In PFSN’s NFL QBi, Tannehill ranked fourth on the season with a letter grade of B+ and an impact score of 87.5. He finished that season with 3819 passing yards, 33 passing touchdowns, seven interceptions, 266 rushing yards, and seven rushing touchdowns in 16 regular-season games.
Tannehill elevated the Titans, and although they didn’t make it to the Super Bowl during his time, he made them better. At the same time, however, he was getting older. In his age-35 season, which was 2023, the Titans drafted quarterback Will Levis with the 33rd overall pick in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The writing was on the wall that Tannehill didn’t have much time left.
Unfortunately, that stayed true for Tannehill. In 2023, he played only 10 games and started eight of them, as he suffered an injury that caused him to miss a few games. For an older quarterback, this is bad because it allows the younger backup to play and potentially “Wow” the coaching staff to the point where he becomes the full-time starter. 2023 would be Tannehill’s last year in the NFL.
Tannehill didn’t play again, probably because he was looking for a starter role. In 2025, he shut down the idea of returning, saying, “I had plenty of calls, but nothing ever felt like the right opportunity that I was looking for. That was last NFL season. At this point, I think that ship has sailed for me.”
