New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo has been making headlines this season for the team with his tough, hard-nosed running style. Skattebo, along with Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart, has infused a Giants team with their own style of energy and focused efforts on the field.
Skattebo, who played his college ball at Arizona State, has kept showing Giants head coach Brian Daboll that he’s worth being the team’s RB1 this season. Yet Skattebo, unfortunately, will not play anymore this season for Big Blue.
What Happened to Giants RB Cam Skattebo?
In New York’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Skattebo was downfield in the Eagles’ secondary when he caught a pass from Dart. When Skattebo was getting tackled, though, his right foot stuck into the Lincoln Financial Field turf.
Skattebo broke his right ankle, a sight that, unfortunately, was caught live on the game’s telecast. Giants medical personnel rushed out to his side, and Dart was shown on camera, visibly upset with his teammate’s situation. He was ultimately carted off the field and let his Giants teammates know that he would be okay.
After an immediate report came out about Skattebo’s injury, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport posted on X with more information about the running back’s status. The report, needless to say, was not good.
“#Giants RB Cam Skattebo, who was placed on IR yesterday, suffered not only a dislocated ankle, but also a fibula fracture and deltoid ligament rupture, sources say,” Rapoport wrote. “Surgery was right away to close the wound, and it was a success. NYG expects him back for the offseason program.”
In the PFSN NFL RB Impact metrics, Skattebo had an RB Impact Score of 76.7 and was ranked 20th in the league at the time of his injury. In the PFSN Offense Impact metrics, the Giants have an Offense Impact Score of 69.1 and grade out to a D+.
It’s a brutal loss not only for the Giants but also for Skattebo’s rookie season. Skattebo’s style was getting accolades and cheers from Giants fans who were falling in love with how tough and rough he played in the NFL.
In eight games for the Giants this season, Skattebo had 101 carries for 410 yards and five touchdowns. The Giants are 2-6 for the season and are looking up from fourth place in the NFC East Division.
