What Happened to Las Vegas Raiders QB Geno Smith?

While the Giants and Raiders came into the Week 17 matchup with the same record of 2-13, New York has clearly been the better team. With a 27-10 lead in the fourth quarter, the Raiders’ comeback attempts took a hit when Smith went down with an ankle injury.

He was slow to get up and was attended to by the trainers on the field. While he was able to leave the field on his own, he limped into the locker room to get examined. The Raiders have officially said he will be out for the remainder of the Week 17 matchup.

Through three and a half quarters, Smith had completed 20 of 28 passes for 176 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.

He’s been banged up a bit, getting sacked a career-high 52 times heading into week 17, but he’s played in 14 games for Las Vegas this season. He’s completed 282 of 420 passes for 2,849 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. He’s also carried the ball 40 times for 108 yards.

Smith’s struggles are evident in the Raiders’ placement in PFSN’s Offense Impact metric. They have the 30th-ranked unit with a score of 58.8. As for Smith, he’s had a rough year, ranking as the 34th overall quarterback in PFSN’s QB Impact metric with a score of 68.7.

The Raiders look like a shoo-in for a number one pick as the Giants and Raiders had the worst overall records in the NFL heading into Week 17. A No. 1 overall pick is helpful, but with multiple holes on the roster, it will be intriguing to see what direction the Raiders will go.

Will they go for a new quarterback with names like Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, Oregon’s Dante Moore, and Alabama’s Ty Simpson expected to be available, or will they try to get one more year out of Smith despite a tough 2025 and bolster the roster in other areas?
