The San Francisco 49ers entered the 2025 NFL season with sky-high expectations, especially after locking up their franchise quarterback, Brock Purdy, with a massive five-year, $265 million contract in the offseason.
But just one week into the campaign, that optimism has been replaced by uncertainty. An injury during the team’s Week 1 victory has sidelined Purdy, leaving the 49ers to navigate a critical early-season stretch without their leader.
What Is the Injury Keeping Brock Purdy From Playing?
During San Francisco’s 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks, Purdy suffered both shoulder and toe injuries. While the shoulder issue might have been manageable, it was the toe injury that proved to be the bigger problem. This turf toe situation significantly hampered the quarterback’s mobility, which is a key part of his game.
On Thursday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Purdy is expected to be out for two to five weeks with “a turf toe variant.” Any quarterback’s effectiveness relies on solid footwork in the pocket, and Purdy is known for his ability to escape pressure. The injury directly impacts that strength.
The following day, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Purdy will miss two to three weeks.
With Purdy sidelined, the 49ers will turn to Mac Jones as their starting quarterback. Jones, a former top draft pick by the New England Patriots, struggled to secure his position there.
Now, the former Alabama standout has another opportunity to prove he can succeed in the NFL as he takes control of the offense before the team’s Week 2 game against the New Orleans Saints at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
How Has Purdy Performed in His Career?
Purdy has thrown for 9,795 yards and 66 touchdowns in his four NFL seasons. According to StatMuse, his performance has also earned him one Pro Bowl selection.
Unfortunately for the 49ers, the bad news from Week 1 did not stop with their quarterback. The team also placed tight end George Kittle on the Injured Reserve, meaning he will be out for at least the next four games.

Heading into Sunday’s game, San Francisco needs to find a way to secure a win. Without Purdy’s leadership, Shanahan and his coaching staff must ensure the entire offense is clicking. The hope in San Francisco is that the team can stack a win or two while waiting for Purdy to return. The 49ers and the Saints will kick off in New Orleans at 1 p.m. ET on FOX.
