San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy suffered an injury in the team’s 17-13 win against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1. Now, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has provided some updates on the quarterback, and the news isn’t great.
NFL Insider Drops Update on Brock Purdy’s Status
On Thursday, September 11, NFL insider Ian Rapoport shared an update on Purdy’s condition, reporting that the quarterback is projected to be sidelined for two to five weeks with a turf toe variant.
“49ers QB Brock Purdy is out 2-5 weeks with a turf toe variant, sources say,” Rapoport wrote. “With this timeline for 49ers QB Brock Purdy, he’s likely to miss games against the Saints and #Cardinals, at least. Then, his availability will be determined by how his rehab goes.”
On Friday, Shanahan confirmed that the team expects Purdy to miss two to three weeks with his injury.
The 49ers’ next four games are against these teams:
- at New Orleans Saints
- vs. Arizona Cardinals
- vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
- at Los Angeles Rams
What Happened to Brock Purdy?
On Wednesday, Shanahan told reporters that Purdy is dealing with both a toe and shoulder injury, making it likely he’ll miss Week 2. When asked about his chances of playing against the Saints, Shanahan admitted, “it’s a long shot.”
He also acknowledged that “it’s possible” Purdy will miss multiple weeks due to his injuries, confirming that the toe injury is a bigger issue than the shoulder issue.
“I think it’s a long shot.”

Since Purdy won’t be able to start against the Saints, Shanahan will have to rely on Mac Jones, who joined the team after a stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The 49ers backed Purdy as their franchise quarterback this offseason, signing him to a five-year, $265 million deal that included a $40 million signing bonus and $182.55 million guaranteed.
Purdy has an average annual salary of $53,000,000. This season, Purdy is earning a base salary of $1,100,000 and a signing bonus of $40,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $9,119,253 and a dead cap value of $62,269,253, according to SpoTrac.
Purdy’s Fantasy Outlook
Purdy was far from perfect on Sunday in Seattle, but he completed 74.3% of his passes and had five rush attempts. That’s essentially what we’ve come to expect.
Career: 16.72 fantasy points per game
Week 1: 16.78 fantasy points
Every position has players like this, solid enough if surrounded by talent, but not the kind who can carry a team on their own. When those players end up in less-than-ideal situations, it’s usually smart to look elsewhere, and that’s exactly the case right now in San Francisco.
Purdy is battling his own injury issues, and to make matters worse, both Jauan Jennings and George Kittle were unable to finish Week 1. Kittle has since been placed on IR and will miss at least the next four games.
