Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy caused a stir last week with his terse comments regarding his relationship with fellow quarterback Kyler Murray. Murray arrived in Minnesota in March to compete for the Vikings’ QB1 position after being released by the Arizona Cardinals, ending a seven-year association with the NFL franchise.
Vikings HC Addresses J.J. McCarthy’s Terse Kyler Murray Comments
While speaking to reporters after Thursday’s Vikings OTA, coach Kevin O’Connell addressed the speculated rift between his two leading quarterbacks, crediting veteran Carson Wentz and quarterbacks coach Josh McCown for keeping the quarterback room harmonious.
“The interpretation of those comments are gonna be what they are. I would just say, in the room, in the actual day-to-day, the dialogue between those guys, the interactions, have been very professional,” O’Connell said. “And even more so than that, it’s just been a positive room… So I didn’t make a lot out of it. I know there was some reaction to it.
“That’s probably not the first time there’s gonna be a reaction to those guys answering questions about the situation,” he continued. “That’s what part of the competition is all about. There’s no hiding anything. It’s going to be displayed on the field, and their teammates and coaching staff and the guys in this building have to feel a conviction about the direction we go.”

After being selected No. 10 overall during the 2024 NFL Draft following a national championship-winning season with the Michigan Wolverines, McCarthy became Sam Darnold’s backup in Minnesota, but he missed his entire rookie season due to a torn meniscus in his right knee.
The former Michigan standout finally won the starting job last season after Darnold departed for the Seattle Seahawks. McCarthy endured an injury-interrupted season, during which he showed flashes of brilliance mixed with inconsistent performances, finishing with a 6-4 record as a starter.
On the other hand, Murray was released by the Cardinals after seven mixed seasons when new head coach Mike LaFleur took over. He signed a one-year deal with the Vikings as he attempts to resuscitate his flatlining career in Minnesota offensive coordinator Wes Phillips’ offense next season.

In his first full season under center for the Vikings, McCarthy notched a 64.3 PFSN QB Impact score, good for No. 37 in the NFL, versus Murray’s 75.1 score, which ranked him at No. 21 in the league.
The tense tussle between the incumbent McCarthy and the interloper Murray for the Vikings’ QB1 role in Week 1 next season promises to be one of the most intriguing battles in the league.
