Is Vic Fangio Returning to Eagles for 2026 NFL Season Amid Retirement Rumors?

Fangio has spent 22 years as a defensive coordinator in the NFL, including the past two seasons with the Eagles. He has helped them to become one of the best defenses in the league during his time there, but they may have to start preparing for his departure in the near future in Philadelphia.

Mike Garafolo recently provided an update to a Jimmy Kempski report on the speculative rumors that he could potentially retire this year.

“Vic Fangio’s return has been uncertain and sort of still is. It’s been leaning to the positive recently but could change again,” stated Garafolo.

Dianna Russini followed up with even more information on the developing situation. She pointed out that he has done this before during his career as a defensive coordinator and mentioned that a final decision on his future has yet to be made.

“He went back and forth a bunch after they won the Super Bowl. We’ll see if ultimately decides to step away,” reported Russini.

While the Eagles apparently claim to be confident that he will return, the NFL insiders also mentioned that they have explored alternative options, which suggests that they may not be fully convinced that Fangio doesn’t decide to retire this year. Jim Schwartz and Jonathan Gannon were named as potential candidates to do so.

Schwartz is seeking a new team after reportedly becoming disgruntled with the Cleveland Browns, who passed on him in favor of bringing in Todd Monken to be their next head coach. Gannon was recently fired by the Arizona Cardinals and is not expected to get an immediate opportunity at being a head coach again.

Both prospective candidates have served as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator previously, but neither has been as consistently successful as Fangio in Philadelphia. His two seasons in the role have resulted in their defense finishing second and seventh in PFSN’s Impact Rankings. He also played a major role in them winning a Super Bowl ring last year and taking the NFC East division title in both seasons.
